Aibu to use sunbeds instead of fake tan?

As a way of focusing on myself, I’m losing weight and making myself a better version of me. Due to getting so large I have bad stretchmarks. Am I unreasonable to use sunbeds as they actually blend the stretch marks more. I find fake tan doesn’t stain the skin the same and makes them stand out more! Really trying to make an effort. Get a colour. Lose weight. Dye my hair. I’m on a mission to regain my confidence through my appearance I’m thinking once I’ve lost the weight in a year to reward myself with veneers and a breast uplift with implants. So yes to fake boobs, tanned and blonde or no stay natural, brunette and pale

Only if having cancer will boost your confidence

SnapdragonToadflax · 17/06/2024 19:21

I'm in my early 40s and know two women my age with who've had cancerous moles removed which they got from sunbeds in their teens.

I can't believe they're still legal, personally.

What I will ask though and personally bugs me. Is the people who have told me off for using sunbeds. Go on four/five holidays a year and sunbathe. Sunbeds are strong but so is the midday sun in Greece. Any colour on your skin is dna damage. A tan is damage. So how many of you completely stay out of the sun?

Me. I stay out of the sun. I had a basal cell carcinoma removed from my face two years ago. It involved 3 stressful and unpleasant operations to try and rebuild my face and I still don’t recognise myself in the mirror. Please take the warnings seriously 😢

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 17/06/2024 19:22

Go for it. Why don't you pick up smoking to help keep the weight off too.

Wantachangefor2024 · 17/06/2024 19:24

NeverDropYourMooncup · 17/06/2024 19:19

Stretchmarks can't tan. You'd just make them more obvious.

I’ve sunbathed and used sunbeds and they blended really nice

The gradual tanning lotion works on mine. They are barely noticeable.

I shall try gradual thanks xx

Honest answer? People who don’t stay out of the sun are people who are stupid and ignorant of how damaging the sun can be to their skin. People who aren't able to understand things like how UVA rays penetrate the skin barrier and cause cell changes. People who value their looks above their health, then spend their later years looking like a shrivelled, puckered prune, because they wanted their moment in the sun. In short, morons.

bryceQ · 17/06/2024 19:26

I don't sunbathe as I'm vain and I wear loads of Spf as I don't want to age prematurely. I don't mind being pale.

MrsMammy · 17/06/2024 19:27

I use sunbeds 2-3 times a week, I've had two c sections and my scar is basically invisible with a tan, I genuinely think being tanned is an addiction, if I feel like I'm going pale I hate it.

Some people look gorgeous with pale skin and others (myself included) look like a corpse without a tan, I don't think you're unreasonable to want to use sunbeds, there is obviously a risk though. If you want bigger boobs, blonde hair and a tan then go for it, whatever makes you happy! X

Wantachangefor2024 · 17/06/2024 19:27

Greenlittecat · 17/06/2024 19:17

I wouldn't do it, but I understand why you would be tempted. It's a bit like smoking isn't it? Terrible for you but a release in a way?

I've heard from friends that sunbeds are just as addictive so it's best not to. Could you try a few different fake tans and see which ones work the best? Are you stretch marks still purple? They will fade!

Do sunbeds work if you put factor 50 on?

Oh also! Well done you for making changes❤️

Thank you ❤️ I wasn’t meaning to offend just trying to have a complete overhaul. Mine aren’t purple they are white. So stand out amongst fake tan it doesn’t stick to them.

You are prematurely aging your skin significantly, so enjoy playing the short game, but don't be surprised when the long game smacks you in the face.

I never tan. Not since I read about the links to skin cancer. For over 20 years I have used SPF every day and avoid the sun altogether 11-3. I also put SPF on my kids throughout the year if the sun is out including in Winter. Never have a beach sunbathing holiday.

Wantachangefor2024 · 17/06/2024 19:29

norfolkbroadd · 17/06/2024 19:17

If you're so pale you're almost translucent then you are even more in the danger zone for skin cancer! You should be using factor 30 spf every single day of the year on your face and a hat when there isn't adequate shade.

I have never in my life burnt and take ages to tan which means I’m at low risk of burning and damage. I have Italian heritage. I have also slathered spf 50 on from head to toe all my life. Even on a cloudy day in winter. Unfortunately I’m aware of the dangers and damage but it’s like smoking or alcohol. You know the dangers but it’s a quick fix

OP posts:
norfolkbroadd · 17/06/2024 19:31

No OP, it doesn't work like that. Your skin type has the least melanin and is the most likely skin type to develop cancer. Whether it burns or not is irrelevant.

I’m really sorry to hear that ❤️ I wish you all the best. I’m realising it would be a shame to damage and put myself at risk as I have slathered myself in spf my entire life

You know the risks and it only affects you

Parents, siblings, partner, children, friends..... If op has any of those, it doesn't only affect her..

Well up until now I have slathered myself in spf by my mum and I carried it on. So I have stayed well and truly out of the sun. Recently tried sunbeds and sunbathed on holiday and it gave me such a boost yes I want to replicate that

Ok then do it, OP. But first maybe google image search 'sunbed melanoma'.

I do.

I wear factor 50 when I’m on (my one) holiday of the year. I’m fair and have freckles and lots of moles.

It’s hard to stay out of the sun completely on holiday, but if I’m round the pool or on the beach I’m under a parasol.

But you do you OP. You’re an adult, so do your own research and make your make your own choices.

I don't think you are being offensive. You've come here for advice!

Theres obviously a market for sunbeds as there is at least one in every town!

For what it's worth, I'm not convinced you would he happier being tanned/blonde/boobs as it's just replacing food with something else (I've been there with bells on!) But if its something you want to do, and you are aware of the risks then its fine! Lots of people put filler etc in their faces and who knows what the longterm affects of those are!

I use coco and eve and haven't noticed my stretch marks but now I'm paranoid 😅

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 17/06/2024 19:37

It would be a shame to loose all that weight and then get skin cancer.

Lavender14 · 17/06/2024 19:43

I used to use sunbeds in my early 20s, I would have gone on my lunch break for a quick session and it did initially make me feel a little better. Until I got a lump on my shoulder. Turned out to be benign but the fear and worry I had was just awful. I would never put myself through it now and I see that as part of self care - not just superficial self care but actually looking after and caring about my long term health. I also have white stretch marks and I try to just embrace them. I'll still notice them when I have a self tan on but whatever- stretch marks are a natural normal part of being a woman and going through puberty or childbirth etc and cannot be "wrong".

I would go blonde if you want to try it, eat well do everything else you're planning but skip the sunbed. I use St Moritz 1hr tan and it works well for me but I top up with a gradual self tanner so I would get about a week out of mine then just exfoliate well and reapply once a week.

I'm trying to pay it forward to future me now and I stay out of the sun and wear spf every day. I don't want to be older looking than I am in years to come. I think you just need to readjust what you consider self care a little so it's also caring for your health.

RocketPanda · 17/06/2024 19:48

Do you know what's harder to cover than stretch marks? Scars from Mohs surgery. It's used to remove skin cancer. They basically cut out a chunk of your skin until they have margins with no cancer and then graft a piece of skin from your leg or your arm onto it. My sister knows someone who had it done on her hairline. She has a scar the size of the bottom of a red bull can.

I’m not saying I will I’m actually looking for a brand of fake tan to disguise the stretch marks and give me some colour. I do know the dangers and weighing up the risks. I think the beauty industry doesn’t tell you about some risks I mean a woman who was telling me how bad sunbeds are had gel fake nails. So puts her hands in a uv lamp 🙈 and spf has got many cancer causing chemicals in it. But many people are unaware of this! Everything. Everything you use and put on your body has a risk
