To put a nearly 4 year old back in pull ups?

Has anyone ever done this and struggled to get back to pants? I don’t think we’ve got an alternative. We ditched the pull ups months and months ago (apart from at night) but I think we’ve got to reset somehow and seeing another post from a mum struggling with potty training made me wonder. So that’s my main question really.

What is the struggle? Constant wetting?
Have you been to the GP to check for health issues like diabetes?

Also what will you do for school? Are there any additional needs?

GRex · 17/06/2024 18:10

No. I think it might be of more use if you share what the issue is that you are trying to solve though? Wee accidents, poo accidents, or toilet leaking?

Didimum · 17/06/2024 18:18

Can you describe what the struggle is? Because 99% of the time the answer is absolutely not.

Thank you. It’s quite hard to explain as I’m just not sure he understands. He does reply that wee and poo should go into the toilet or potty but just uses pants as if it’s a nappy, just wets and soils. If you take him regularly he will wee on the toilet but if things get busy or he drinks a lot more than normal he just wets his pants. We’ve made no real progress and we’re nearly a year in (typing that is depressing.) All that’s happening is every day he has underpants and trousers on, every day he poos in them and wees.

Pull ups only delay toilet training. Both my sons went into what we called " big boy pants when they were 2 and a half. They chose their own pants. We had a sticker reward system and whenever my husband and I went to the loo they went too.I remember we clapped and praised them when they used the potty which seemed to encourage them .

Assuming no developmental delay, it’s worth checking out medical causes as this is unusual. Has he suffered with constipation now or in the past?

YourSpryWriter · 17/06/2024 18:27

I did it. Sometimes you just have to go back and then have another go at it. It was causing so much stress. I put him back in pull ups and then regularly took him to the toilet and then gradually went back to pants and it worked for us. Good luck. I know how hard it is but you will get there.

When is he due to start school? My DD will be 3 in August. We started toilet training in January and after 3 weeks we put her back in pull ups because she just wasn’t getting it, and I was getting so frustrated and upset with the daily accidents and washing/cleaning up. We kept on with toilet training, the pull ups just eased the stress for me. We went back to pants again in May, and although she has had a handful of accidents, we’ve not had any in the last 10 days.

I know going back to pull-ups is not the best solution, for me it was the only solution because I was so so frustrated, and it’s all worked out for the best. For what it’s worth, my eldest potty trained almost instantly and had no accidents after 5 days, so each child is different.

You're not alone! My 4 year old just doesn't seem to understand that he needs to go to the toilet / refuses and will leave it until he wets himself. I haven't found a perfect solution - but I have had some real success with giving him a prize if he goes to the toilet and comes out with dry pants. I just wrapped up some Lego he already had in some kitchen towel (about 5 pieces in each) and told him it was new - so it's an instant reward.

We also tried going back to nappies a while ago, but honestly it just un-did everything and made it more difficult - especially how nappies just aren't an option when it comes to school
