Ok maybe I did a dramatic title but seriously I need help.

My husband snores, usually it's fine (ish) but he has a cold and it's unbearable at the moment. I'm just dropping off and he'll wake me up with a massive snore and I'm so close to just smothering him with his pillow.

We don't have a spare room at the moment so there is nowhere to go and he has a really important job so I can't really kick him awake constantly as he won't get any sleep and then he can't do his job (pilot) but I've got cancer and I need to rest!

Anyway! I bought some silicone ear plugs after seeing posts on here saying that they were awesome for snoring, but I can hear him more than foam earplugs!!!

Last night I used foam ear plugs and then silicone blobs on top to cement them in but my ears are so sore now! However they did work!

How do I use them so they magically block out his snoring? Please help!!!

He is wearing nose strips but they're a bit pointless as his nose is blocked so he's mouth breathing and it's hideous.

Sympathies, that sounds horrendous. My daughter has Bose noise-cancelling sleep buds and says they're brilliant. I think they do a free 90 day trial to see how you get on with them.

Fab I'm going to google those! Thank you!

As a fellow sufferer, I've found these to be by far the best earplugs for blocking out the noise - https://www.amazon.co.uk/3MTM-RTM-Classic-Ear-Plugs/dp/B019YMITCU/ref=sr_1_1 - the ones you buy in the chemists for sleeping are useless in my experience.

If you want to persevere with the silicone ones then the trick is to roll them into a ball and then mould them to the ear canal entrance rather than trying to push them into your ear. They are brilliant for blocking out the noise, but they aren't as comfortable as decent ear plugs for a full night sleeping.

Has he seen his GP about this.
If it is purely down to nasal congestion it might be relatively simple to treat. Saline rinses do work wonders.

RoobarbAndMustard · 17/06/2024 14:51

He might have sleep apnea which is a risk to long term health. Is he overweight? Get him to go to his GP.

pikkumyy77 · 17/06/2024 14:55

I think you need multiple solutions: I agree it sounds like he has sleep apnea and this is very bad for his concentration when awake. Since he is a pilot this really needs attending to. Definitely send him for a sleep study and get him treated.

Secondly: your sleep is precious. I am very sorry about the cancer diagnosis. I would turn any extra room into a bedroom at this point and move him out for the duration: home office, dining room, wherever. You need undisturbed sleep.

Isometimeswonder · 17/06/2024 22:48

I agree with pp. You both need good sleep. Can you sleep in the living room? Get a fold out mattress or something.
Sorry about the cancer, I hope you have the support you need.

I'm sleeping in the bed alone tonight as he is away with work and honestly I'm so excited. He has his medical for work next week and he's going to mention it. It'll be quicker to do that than go via GP! Thanks all!

Do you have a spare room, just til he’s over the worst?

I recommend these WAX mouldable earplugs from Boots. They’re quite big but you can pinch a bit off them, to fit. The house could fall down and I’d sleep on, with these!!!
