Compensate someone if their property is stolen from your home?

Just curious, this is completely hypothetical as I just watched a S&TC episode where Carrie is told to take her shoes off in someone’s apartment and they end up getting stolen.

For anyone who doesn’t watch it, the person eventually ends up buying her the same shoes to replace them. Costing around $300.

Aibu would you replace someone’s stolen item? Regardless of cost.

Like at a party in a home? ie it would have been ay number of people

or

just my family here when they visited?

Pepsiisbetterthancoke · 16/06/2024 14:41

Yes of course I would without thinking as I would feel terrible that it happened

beAsensible1 · 16/06/2024 14:42

I suppose if one of the guests at your party stole them after you made everyone take off their shoes.

then you might feel obligated.

FuzzyStripes · 16/06/2024 14:42

Yes if it was a negligible amount and that’s what home insurance is for if a large amount.

Ponoka7 · 16/06/2024 14:44

I'd expect them to be ok with me reporting it to the Police and if they gad insurance, putting in a claim. I would waver the excess.

Tbskejue · 16/06/2024 14:54

From memory she didn’t want to take her shoes off and they made her so yes I would as she didn’t go in them expecting to leave them at her own risk. If someone brought a coat knowing they’d be leaving it unattended I’d feel a bit more reluctant but would replace out of embarrassment that a guest in my home had stolen something from someone else

forevertheother · 16/06/2024 14:54

Really people would use their insurance? 🤷‍♀️

There is usually an excess when it comes to home insurance so shoes worth €300 wouldn't be covered.
However, it was obviously one of the guests that stole those shoes.
I would 100% compensate if that happened under my roof, particularly as the host insisted she remove them and put them in a pile, rather than a safe place.

There are so many ring doorbells nowadays something like that would probably be caught.(ie bag bulging)

What? You’d want to claim on their insurance? 😂😱

If they said that I'd have to leave shoes £400+ or one of my handbags (more likely I don't have expensive shoes) in a certain spot in their house, then yes. It depends on how cooperative they were, I'd want details of guests etc. It's scummy to rob off people who you mix with. I go without for my handbags.

Allfur · 16/06/2024 18:45

No, I would expect people to not wear such ridiculous shoes in the first place and if they did, look after them

FTPM1980 · 16/06/2024 18:54

Totally depends on the scenario and the insurance situation.

Friend leaves laptop in my house for a week, we get burgled. claiming on insurance...I would use insurance to replace the laptop.

Friend leaves bike unlocked on my driveway for and hour and its taken....they claim on their insurance. I have no responsibility.

All leisure centres etc have signs up saying not responsible for items left at own risk. I think that's the same for visitors in your house.

In the SaTC scenario who stole the shoes...not that I would ever insist anyone took their shoes off etc, but also can't imagine a scenario where another guest stole anything. If I was at fault I would. But if I had had no role in what happened no I wouldn't....eg DD has lots of friends round, one of them leaves a bag on a chair and another steals from bag....neither DD ir I have any role in that bag was owners responsibility.

Gwenhwyfar · 16/06/2024 18:59

I wouldn't. Similarly, if I accidentally damaged something while visiting someone else I wouldn't be willing to pay hundreds to replace it.
For the satc episode it should be mentioned that Carrie wasn't given the option of keeping her shoes on.
