Friend poked my hip and said ‘beep beep’

I was standing in a bar wearing a nice pair of trousers with a top and talking to a friend when she suddenly poked the side of my hip twice (my flesh was exposed as my top had ridden up ever so slightly) and said ‘beep beep’. I think it was meant as a sly dig about my hip fat/exposed flesh but AIBU? It made me feel very self conscious and a bit violated. Bit maybe I overreacted?

I don't really agree with previous posters. I think it's super weird of your friend. Poking you? Seriously? And the "beep beep" is just ambiguous and a bizarre thing to say.

CammyChameleon · 16/06/2024 08:42

One time at an old job (when I was still an idiot teenager) my boss was walking backwards a few steps, and I impulsively made the beep...beep...beep noise that large trucks make when they're reversing to warn you that they can't see you.

I didn't mean to make a fat joke, I just thought "lol she's reversing and can't see me, like a truck" and thankfully she did laugh it off after asking "Are you comparing me to a truck?!" and watching me splutter in horror.

It's now one of those embarrassing memories that play in my brain when I'm trying to sleep at 3am.

OptimismvsRealism · 16/06/2024 08:45

She poked you in your fat and everyone here thinks that's fine???????

I'd want to headbutt her.

JoanOgden · 16/06/2024 08:46

I'd be annoyed by this tbh and can't imagine any of my friends doing it

ArseholeCatIsABlackAndWhiteCat · 16/06/2024 09:13

Why didn't you ask HER? We're not mind readers or know her personally so can't tell if she was being playful, making fat digs, warning you your top was up or identifying as a truck.

whyhavetheygotsomany · 16/06/2024 09:15

She was just being silly

HappierTimesAhead · 16/06/2024 09:16

I think it's a weird thing to do and a weird choice of words BUT not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. I have done a lot of weird stuff in my time that I would now cringe about. I find social situations bring out the worst in me.

sadmum27 · 16/06/2024 09:18

Do you like your friend?

StikItToTheMan · 16/06/2024 09:20

I have a bad habit of saying 'beep beep' for 'move please'.

It started with the dc when they were toddlers. Then it naturally phased out.

Then when we got a puppy 2 years ago for some reason I started saying it to her and it's now a firmly ingrained command so we can't change it 😂 She knows 'beep beep' means move and will immediately get down from her place on the sofa/move from where she's standing.

Due to that it's still an often used phrase around the home and sometimes it just slips out to a person when what I mean is 'excuse me please' 😂😂

This - no need to be aggressive or defensive just ask "what does that mean?'

AstonMartha · 16/06/2024 09:21

Surely you asked what she meant?

Catnipcupcakes · 16/06/2024 02:40

What does ‘beep beep’ mean?

Get out of the way or I’ll run you over with my imaginary car 😂

Bestyearever2024 · 16/06/2024 09:25

I actually disagree with many PP, OP

A 'friend' poking my skin/fat which was poking out of my clothes/where my clothing had ridden up and making a strange noise to attract attention to the skin/fat.....is fucking rude

Very rude indeed

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 16/06/2024 09:30

Yes you are overreacting

usernother · 16/06/2024 09:33

Why didn't you just ask her instead of asking on here? Much easier than us guessing what she meant.

Sue152 · 16/06/2024 09:38

Well it depends. Is she known for making sly digs at people including her friends or are you known for taking things over personally and projecting your insecurities on to what other people innocently say?

VolvoFan · 16/06/2024 09:42

YABU. You are overreacting and you're reading far too deeply into an incredibly harmless interaction.

LakeTiticaca · 16/06/2024 10:11

I seriously wonder how some people manage to get out of bed in the mornings, get dressed and do a day's work without finding anything and everything offensive.
Thank god I'm in my 60s with about 20 years max before I check out for good 🤣🤣

Reminds me of when my youngest dc first started nursery and I was shopping without a child sitting in the trolley seat. I bumped trolleys with another one coming round the corner of the aisle and found myself saying “Oops, CRASH!” to the other trolley driver!

Butchyrestingface · 16/06/2024 05:29

Unless ‘beep, beep’ is friend code for ‘pull your top down, you flesh-exposing, heathen slut’, I’d say you are BU.

😂

ShowerOfShites · 16/06/2024 10:33

Bit maybe I overreacted?

How do we know? You didn't tell us how you reacted? 🤷‍♂️

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 16/06/2024 10:34

shearwater2 · 16/06/2024 07:56

I think it's playful.

What did annoy me though was when I out with a group of women, most of whom I barely knew, someone hung onto my tshirt underneath when I removed a layer. I really don't care if I expose an inch of belly to the room, you don't need to preserve my modesty!

I think they were looking out for you. I've seen boobs exposed in that situation.

Ilikeadrink14 · 16/06/2024 10:34

Stupid question over a stupid thing. If that’s all you have to worry about, think yourself lucky!!

dontcryformeargentina · 16/06/2024 10:55

She is jealous of you. If she's done similar things before, consider her as a frenemy. Real friends wouldn't want you to feel bad about yourself.

HooverTheRoof · 16/06/2024 12:09

I think violated is going a bit far but I wouldn't appreciate being poked in my exposed flab either op. She probably didn't mean anything by it but I'd hate that.
