All the hype.... And it's as dull as ditchwater. Absolutely no sexual tension, or shagging, or anything exciting. What happened?

I have to agree @Theedgeoftheabyss It's such tripe. As a pp said, it's like naff, poorly made, badly written fan fiction. I am actually embarrassed for Nicola Coughlan. I cringe watching her, and the bloke she is with. The kissing/ shagging/ getting naked was so naff. I had to start covering my eyes. Not because of the 'sex,' and her showing her tits, but because it was SO BAD! 😆So wooden and cheesy. 😖

Nicola is brilliant in Derry Girls, but I can't take to her in this, I am just not buying it. It's just sooooooo bad! As has been said, it's too 'try hard.' It just doesn't work IMO.

I think when Season 1 came out we were in covid and it was new and fresh, a colourblind period drama with beautiful sets, costumes and actors. Simon and Daphne’s story was very well done, his childhood angst, Daphne being young and naive, them finally having their happy ending. Now 3 seasons in it’s getting a bit tiresome, I felt like Penelope and Colin did not have that path up sexual tension of the previous 2 series. The sex scenes seemed rushed and there seemed to be too many side stories going on.

I did still enjoy it and would watch the next series.

poolemoney · 15/06/2024 22:59

Season 1 and Queen Charlotte were watchable, but season 2 and 3 were awful.

Colin is a prat, Penelope deserves more. I gave up after episode 1.

Blackcats7 · 15/06/2024 23:02

I honestly don’t understand the attraction. It’s the silliest so called historical drama I have ever seen. And why do people want to see shagging so much? Makes me cringe.

Rantypanties · 15/06/2024 23:06

I really tried to like it but I just can’t warm to Penelope’s character and there doesn’t seem to be any depth to the stories. All style (which is very very beautiful) and no substance so I’m finding myself scrolling my phone as it’s on.

Good TV for a rainy day on holiday.

ouch321 · 15/06/2024 23:19

I thought it was okay, not quite as good as I'd hoped but there we are.

Francesca is stunning though, had to note that.

I'll look forward to OMITB S4 instead now.

LadyMuckRake · 15/06/2024 23:24

Me too watched three, didn't grab me.

Sgtmajormummy · 15/06/2024 23:38

I’m just here for the costumes…

olderbutwiser · 15/06/2024 23:39

If it wasn’t for the production values it would be completely unwatchable, appalling hokey scripts and 1000% predictable plots, and part 1 of season 3 is pretty weak, but the clothes and the cast are so breathtakingly gorgeous I can’t resist it.

BiancaBlue · 16/06/2024 00:07

I hate it. I can't explain what exactly but as a black woman I find the way they ignore the fact that racism was ever a thing unbearable. It feels so tokenistic and superficial.

Orangeandgold · 16/06/2024 01:32

I fell asleep and couldn’t finish the last series so I was dreading this one - so I haven’t watched it yet.

Nothing has come close to season one.

ZebrasAreStripy · 15/06/2024 22:27

I both agree and disagree. There was some pretty steamy stuff between Penelope and Colin in the final few episodes. However, the very last episode was rather disappointing when they were all outside waving off Eloise et al. It was like ‘is that it?’…

Did you see the end scene after the start of the credits?

Foxyaus · 16/06/2024 01:56

The sex scene with Penelope and Colin was horrendously bad; awkward, over acted and just cringeworthy.
The costumes and scenery of the show were the only things that made it watch able, I can only imagine what anyone involved in accurate period dramas would be thinking of Bridgerton. 🙄😆

I agree. Let’s just tell the same heterosexual love story 100,000 times. That’s what would be really entertaining.

It's not about that. I am all for inclusivity and enjoyed many other dramas that have non heterosexual relationships.

It just seems to be a bit too try-hard.

A tick-the-box exercise.

No disabled characters in the books? -Fixed.
No men that like men? Let's add that in for one of the main characters.
No women who like women? Let's change the sex of a main character for one of the books. Sorted.

I accept that If you choose to watch something that is adapted from books that you have read then you have to accept that they will have made changes before anyone tells me I shouldn't have expected it all to be the same.

Blackcats7 · 16/06/2024 12:45

I agree about the need for inclusivity in tv in general but it often does feel very token and forced in programmes and generally makes me turn off. I am disabled but I don’t want a token disabled character parachuted in to make a point. I am watching drama for the story not for education about diversity.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/06/2024 12:49

I love a period drama. But gave up after 3 episodes.

Summertimeinschool · 16/06/2024 13:49

I like it but I can see why people would be confused if they expected it to be a normal period drama. It's a made up world with taylor swift being played on violins...

The scene in the streets the night before the wedding saved the whole of season 3 part 2 for me as they were then happy enough to get married after that. After both weddings in season one and two being disasters I just wanted a happy wedding.
