Ignorance regarding voting is rife

With the GE around the corner, I read too many times some people banging on about: "You must vote..... women died for the right to vote. etc etc" - then at times you get, "My great grandfather/etc/etc for your freedom so you should vote, etc, etc!"!

People around the world fought for their freedom from the Nazis. It was freedom we retained with millions of armed personnel and civilians losing their lives.
Freedom is the right to choose!!

AIBU to feel that ignorance is rife regarding voting, IE many lack the basic understandings of a 'right to vote' Vs mandatory voting??

FYI, I'm posting from London/England. At times I feel that a lot of these posters may be posting from Russia, China, Australia, North Korea etc as voting there is mandatory I believe and you are not given the freedom to decide.

Scenario!! Come the GE and I have a choice to vote for Labour, Conservatives, Greens, Libs, Refrom, Independent, Etc, ETC. Why should I vote for any of them as I do not just trust my local candidates and nor do I trust at all any political party they represent as things stand!!

I guess, if they had a Jackass as a candidate with the above, I'd vote for that animal.

Finally, everyone that is a citizen of England must have the right to vote when aged 18 and over. Importantly, the right/freedom to refrain from voting must be upheld as this is what my great-grandparents nd their parents fought for!!!

Thank you.

I completely diagree
The freedom to choose if to vote or not to vote is the question. The answer is clear as one must retain the freedom to choose between the two.

You have the freedom either way. Just depends how much you believe in your cause.

I'm not quite sure what you are wittering on about today and what your point is but in the last London mayor election the turn out was something like 33%.
So I think plenty of people know you don't HAVE to vote.
Or they simply couldn't be arsed.

1/3 of the population didn't vote I the last election you can choose to vote none by writing it across the paper. This then registers as a protest vote as opposed to not being heard at all.

No it doesn't. It gets counted as a spoiled vote and then ignored. There is no such think as a registered protest vote in the UK.

Hawki · 15/06/2024 22:59

i wish the voters that always eg vote for x party reconsider and vote for whats best for the country etc

haddockfortea · 15/06/2024 23:10

Lilyhatesjaz · 15/06/2024 23:17

The suferjets?

Emmely Plankwurst will be spinning in her grave.

I properly snorted.

FFS though. SurferJets, 19 as a voting age, London as the UK, Australia is a dictatorship. Not voting at that point seems sensible.

If you are going to make a political troll post,at least get the name of the fucking country right!

Honestly @mustgetanewshed , lifes too short.

Painting something and watching it dry would be a more constructive and worthwhile use of your time then reading anything the OP has to say on any topic, unless you enjoy a sensation I can only liken to having your brain rolled in broken glass.

@DistinguishedSocialCommentator

The point is those countries along with Australia have mandatory voting

My point is as per my OP

Voting must be a right for those 18 and over but we must retain the freedom of choice, IE to vote or not vote!!

You make it sound like some kind of tremendous difficulty. In Australia, elections are held on Saturdays and we all turn up to our local school, vote and get a sausage sandwich from the school's fundraising stall. We're not led in there at gunpoint.

Compulsory voting means every person of voting age has a say in our democracy.

I gather OP is this year’s Kensyar, or whatever he was called.

Am trying to be more Zen about the situation this time round. Grin

No, no, the others spent the day hiding under the desk evading the voting police who were definitely coming to find them as apparently people don't know voting isn't compulsory.....

You don't have to vote, but as my father used to say:
If you don't vote, don't moan after.

This.

What an interesting opinion.
