To think this is the start of type 1 diabetes in my 4 year old?

Hyperemesishell · 15/06/2024 11:46

My Mum has T1 diabetes (diagnosed late aged 22)

My son drinks a lot and although not dry at night, has never soaked through his nappy. Over the past 2 weeks; more often than not he’s soaking through his happy. He eats CONSTANTLY, much much more than my older child. He’s constantly looking for thinking about or eating food. He’s not overweight at all which is surprising considering the amount he eats and he’s quite a lazy (!) child. Sleeps well but always has done (12 hours a night) recently noticed black bags under his eyes. My Dad commented he thought he’d lost weight and it does look like he’s lost around 3lbs.

Ive been doing his blood sugar over the past couple of days, these are the readings:

13th June
8.2 4pm no food since lunch
7.2 6.30pm after dinner

14th June
6.5 fasted 7.30am
12.1 6.15pm after dinner
6.1 8pm
7.0 10pm

15th June
5.7 6.30am (fasted)
9.7 10.15am after breakfast
7.0 11.15am

If he’s had a reading over 11 you need to take him to a&e as that’s pretty much a diagnosis and he may end up in DKA very quickly. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this- it’s crap.

Hesma · 15/06/2024 12:06

If you have concerns then you need to take him to the GP. I wonder why you’ve been doing readings at home and asking mumsnet rather than getting him seen?

Greengrapeofhome · 15/06/2024 12:07

Have you not taken him to be seen at all with these concerns? It sounds like he really does need to be seen

Dramatic · 15/06/2024 12:08

His blood sugar was 12.1? Yeah he needs to be seen sooner rather than later

romdowa · 15/06/2024 12:09

What is wrong with you? Take your 4 year old to a medical Professional!!!!

Answersunknown · 15/06/2024 12:09

Stop doing his readings - because you’re not doing them in the right places for a start!

Take the child to see a DR.

You are not a DR and you’re playing GOOGLE medicine with your child’s health.

He ticks the boxes for T1 symptoms and one of those fasted readings is high!

hazelnutfriday · 15/06/2024 12:09

go to A and E now

She did it immediately after food if I’m reading correctly so it wouldn’t be used for diagnosis.
higher than 11.1 2 hours post food is the criteria here for the glocose test.

however I completely agree that she needs to stop fannying around and see a dr

yumyumyumy · 15/06/2024 12:11

You've had days to get him seen. Call 111 now. They are likely to refer you to a&e.

IfIHadAHeart · 15/06/2024 12:13

What is wrong with you?

Undiagnosed/unmanaged T1 can lead to fatal consequences. Having a close family member with T1, you should know this. Your mum certainly will.

Stop fucking about checking his blood sugar and get him seen!!

Furrydogmum · 15/06/2024 12:16

I'm not trying to be alarmist, but a 9 Yr old died recently having been taken to hospital and diagnosed with Type 1. It is so very sad. Please get your son checked out.

PottedPlantCrazy · 15/06/2024 12:18

You’re wasting time that a type one diabetic at risk of DKA, does not have. (If that is what is going on, I mean)

It is better to be safe, get him checked - a fasting blood of 12mmols, nope.

This is coming from a type one myself. Stop playing drs and the recording his blood sugars over a few days - he needs to go in URGENTLY and have an actual VBG done and blood work, please, before it’s too late.

Shiningout · 15/06/2024 12:19

Honestly op if you're that concerned to be taking his blood sugars etc you need to get him seen, mumsnet is not a medical advise forum, you cannot mess around with diabetes ffs

GrazingSheep · 15/06/2024 12:24

This is why MN should ban these type of threads.

How long after was the reading taken though, it's not clear

DailyEnergyCrisis · 15/06/2024 12:27

You do need to get him seen by a doctor sooner rather than later.

AngelDelightButNotStrawberry · 15/06/2024 12:28

As a mum with a type 1 child these sort of posts infuriate me.

Sunshineandrainbow · 15/06/2024 12:24

I read it as immediately after food, but if it were tested 2hrs after presumably she’d have had him seen to rather than asking for advice online.

Hyperemesishell · 15/06/2024 12:31

Gosh, the accusatory nature of these are horrific.
Ive taken him to the GP, more than once. No glucose in urine, normal blood sugar reading at the point in time. No UTI which was my initial concern with how much he was weeing.
To the person that has said I’m not doing it in the right place, I am. If he’d had a 12.1 at any other time than straight after food I’d have taken him immediately to A&E. I’m going to go straight back to the Gp on Monday morning and my reason for doing the blood sugars is to show them that I’m concerned and the variability in his readings.

OP posts:
KreedKafer · 15/06/2024 12:32

Why on earth are you titting about doing your own blood sugar readings on your four-year-old instead of taking him to the doctor? You don’t really know what you’re doing and you’re not going to get a diagnosis from random strangers on bloody Mumsnet.

Hyperemesishell · 15/06/2024 12:32

NormaNormalPants · 15/06/2024 12:30

Exactly right, it was straight after which is why I didn’t immediately go to A&E.

Lifeinlists · 15/06/2024 12:32

If this is genuine - then off you go to A&E now! They have doctors there.

And, yes, mumsnet should close down threads like this.

Hyperemesishell · 15/06/2024 12:33

yes you’re right it was straight after food

OP posts:
khaa2091 · 15/06/2024 12:34

I am seriously concerned for your 4 yr old that they are having repeated unnecessary blood sugar measurements. As a one off, sure, but it is not normal behaviour to do this.

hazelnutfriday · 15/06/2024 12:37

if you think your chid has diabetes, he needs to go straight to hospital, but from what you are now saying, he has been seen by doctors, and they said no, so why are you testing him?
