To be so scared about this spot in my ear.

I’ve had pain in my ear for a couple of months at least. I asked DH to look at it when it first started and he couldn’t really see anything except some dry skin. It’s only sore to touch. I assumed it was just dry skin causing me issues so I didn’t really think any more about it, and I’ve just put up with the odd pain if I accidentally touch or scratch it.

however, this evening, DH has looked at my ear and it looks like this. I have a history of health anxiety so I’ve got myself into a state thinking that this is something serious!

I know no-one on here can really give medical advice, but are there any non scary things that this could be? I have the whole weekend before I can even book a GP appointment.

Looks like an ordinary spot! Give it a few days

NeverDropYourMooncup · 14/06/2024 19:44

Non-scary - like it's a spot?

SheSellsSheShells · 14/06/2024 19:45

I’ve had pain from this area for probably 3 months.

I’d say this is just a very red and angry looking spot. By the time you get a doctors appointment it will have disappeared. I wouldn’t be remotely alarmed by this. I hope this helps.

cherryassam · 14/06/2024 19:46

It looks like a spot that has been poked and a little blood blister or the like has formed.

Ear spots can be excruciating.

SheSellsSheShells · 14/06/2024 19:46

So giving it a few days isn’t likely to make much difference. I’m actually wondering if DH just didn’t have a close enough look last time.

If you are worrried about a melanoma, it’s not going to be in an area so hidden from the sun, and it’s not going to be painful.

Pinkypinkyplonk · 14/06/2024 19:48

Spots in the ear are painful as there is nowhere for any swelling to go, that makes the pain worse! All the skin layers etc.. are tightly bound. There is also slightly less blood supply, so things like spots, piercings etc… can take longer to heal than they do elsewhere on the body

SheSellsSheShells · 14/06/2024 19:48

That’s reassuring @MyKidsAreTooNoisy. thank you. It’s the fact there has been probably 3 months of pain that is causing me to worry.

It's very small but does look painful so might be worth asking a pharmacist to have a look to see if you can put anything on it.

cherryassam · 14/06/2024 19:49

There is a benign condition that causes painful lumps on the ear cartilage.

Deffo get it checked by a GP as it’s clearly causing you concern, and I have health anxiety so I know how dreadful you’ll be feeling about it. But there is nothing that is making me concerned (and this comes from someone who overreacts to health stuff a lot!)

BobbyBiscuits · 14/06/2024 19:54

It's in a place where it would be really sore. Normally we could have a spot for 3 months somewhere and if we didn't see it or pick it, we wouldn't even know. It's just that the ear has so many cartilage and bones and skin and it's such a complex shape, also wax etc can make spots near the ear hole (sorry, I'm no doctor!)
I honestly don't think it's anything bad. Put some sudocreme on it maybe? If it could be allergy related you could take antihistamines.

Whataretalkingabout · 14/06/2024 20:00

Doctor's wife here!
That looks like a boil if it is painful, or an infected hair follicle. I would go to the pharmacy and ask for transcutaneous hexomedine, not the regular hexomedine. It is a local antiseptic that will kill the germs ( probably staphylococcus) through several layers of skin. Then soak some cotton in the product, apply to ear and leave in place for a couple hours or overnight. Do this everyday until it disappears.

Unless it is something else and you can then see your gp on Monday.

HTH

Thank you all. Hopefully it’s something simple that can be easily sorted!

Yes , nip to the pharmacy and ask them to take a look

PonyPatter44 · 14/06/2024 21:22

Oh for goodness sake, calm down. Its a spot. Put some Germolene on it and see if it goes away.

LittleMousewithcloggson · 14/06/2024 21:27

This is not true. I think you need to do a little bit more research on melanoma.
