To ask, how many vests and sleepsuits in each size?

Expecting our DD in November

First time parents do a bit clueless on what to buy. I know it’s advised to only have one or two outfits in tiny sizes as sleepsuits are easier. What amounts do we need of each size?

Shops are all different weights and sizes I notice, so sticking with Next, Tesco and Sainsbury’s as their sizing is the same.

I was going to aim for 12-15 sleepsuits and vests in each size. Is this a good number or do we need more/less?

Also will buy a few cardis and a cosy pramsuit in each size.

I had an end Nov baby, I preferred to have everything washed and ready rather than doing it all midst baby.

We had 2 sleeping bags, much better and less fidgety than swaddling with a muslin.

I also kept a week and bits worth of clothing so if I only got around to it once a week, then I didn't stress about running out of anything.

2x 5 pack long bodysuit
8 zip rompers (SO much better than fiddling with poppers)
Mitts - a few pairs
Socks
4-5 warm hats (1 in the car, 1 in the stroller, 1 near front door)
3 baby blankets
1 pack muslins
1/2 snowsuit

Also had an ELCS and this is what I did:

For each day in labelled clear bag (eg. day1, first outfit after birth, etc):

1 bodysuit
1 romper
1 swaddle
1 hat
1 pair mitts, socks
1 nappy
1 bib/ muslin

Then I had a bag labelled spares ( and clearly labelled with what's inside).

Everyone at the hospital was very impressed at how organised I was. 😅
The last thing I wanted to do was being in pain and being asked stupid questions like where is what. And as I packed everything, I didn't want to explain to dh at that time where's things. So each day all I said to dh, days 2 outfit/ day 3😅

Baby clothing is just dirt cheap op, and you can buy multipacks to get through the first few weeks with basics. But save yourself all the mental hassle by just being prepared as much as you can.

Can i recommend Asda first size to start with. It's 6-9 lb which is good for most newborns. My daughter was 6lb13 dropping to 6lb8 and this meant we didn't need tiny baby which were often only up to 7lb which we would've have got a lot of use out of
We used a mix of Asda and Sainsbury's. The Asda were often smaller than the Sainsbury's and meant we didn't outgrow all of our clothes at one time. Especially when she was little in 2 days something could go from being ok to two small. She could go into the size up in Asda when still fitting into Sainsbury's so the transition between sizes was smoothed out.
We generally had 5-10 short sleeved vests 5 long sleeved vests and 6 sleepsuits. I moved to leggings or dungarees and t shirts or vests during the day within a few weeks as I hate sleepsuits with a passion! It's impossible to get all 4 limbs in at once. We also did cloth nappies and her big bum meant that we needed to size up bottoms before tops and the sized up sleepsuits legs were far too long!

That sounds plenty, but I would get that many in 0-3 months and only one or two in newborn size.

BurbageBrook · 14/06/2024 20:37

And I loved sleepsuits. Comfortable for baby to sleep in all day, and the poppers really aren't that fiddly.

Sounds like you’re referring to a sleepsuit! The full body suits with poppers / zips? :)

They’re called ‘all in ones’ so now I am even more confused 😁

How would we use these? For sleeping or daytime? September baby 🤞🏻

Both. If you like sleepsuits/babygrows/onesies (which are all the same thing) then they are fine for day or night.

LuxeBiscuit · 14/06/2024 21:18

@Decaffe I should have added all in ones to the list. Sleepsuits / all in one / baby grow / onesie are all the same thing.

From spending a lot of time with a friend's new baby, he slept for most of the day so in the early months there's no real difference between day and night clothes. He was in 'sleepsuits' for pretty much the first 2 months. Also, newborns are so scrunched up outfits don't really make sense to me at that age.

Hummingbirdie · 14/06/2024 21:20

That’s a lot!!!!!

I had 4 newborns vests and 4 sleepsuit.

6-8 of size 0-3 months. And then 6 of size 3-6 months!!!

bakewellbride · 14/06/2024 21:23

Just a heads up Tesco sizes come up really small and next is massive!!

Really useful to see what people get

@Roundroundthegarden I’m impressed by the organisation! I’m expecting in December and I was wondering whether you got long sleeve or short sleeve bodysuits. Did you only need one of each per day at the hospital? Do mitts and socks get dirty or can you reuse them a second day?

I’m very clueless!
