I would NEVER describe a hygienist treatment as relaxing!

isthismenopausalrage · 12/06/2024 15:54

It's like bdsm for your mouth no?

AnneLovesGilbert · 12/06/2024 15:55

No one I’ve ever heard. I go because I feel I should but I absolutely hate it. I like the hygienist, she’s charming, but I loathe the process and spend 45 minutes wriggling my toes to stop me gagging.

purpleme12 · 12/06/2024 15:56

Who's said it's relaxing 🤣🤣

Sahara123 · 12/06/2024 15:58

I’ve never heard anyone say it’s relaxing! All that scraping, I hate it ! I can’t understand why anyone would want to be a hygienist, absolute torture.
My actual dentist is fab, I swear I’ve had root canal treatment and didn’t feel a thing.

MorrisZapp · 12/06/2024 16:00

My sil has her mouth fully numbed before her hygienist appointment or the pain is unbearable.

Thorinfling · 12/06/2024 16:05

Agree with previous posters. Hygiene treatments are horrendous, I go every 6 months and have (I was told) excellent dental hygiene and it still fucking hurts.
My DH has to have his mouth numbed up for them.

ShrubRose · 12/06/2024 16:05

Relaxing!?
Absolutely not. But I will say that the more you've flossed in the previous months, the less painful it will be. And they can use a numbing gel as well.

KreedKafer · 12/06/2024 16:09

I was expecting a spa treatment

Why?! It's dentistry, not a massage.

It doesn't bother me in the slightest, and I've never found it painful, but it's not enjoyable and I don't really understand why anyone would think it was meant to be. It's just a mildly tiresome necessity.

Changingplace · 12/06/2024 16:11

I can’t handle it, it’s too painful so I don’t have hygienists appointments anymore, I know I should but it’s unbearable.

Waitingfordoggo · 12/06/2024 16:18

Yes, it’s uncomfortable. I think it depends on the clinician too. With the one I went to previously it was really quite painful. The one I see now is much better.

It isn’t relaxing, but it’s tolerable. But I once fell asleep during a root canal treatment and also during a tattoo so my responses to discomfort/pain might not be typical. 😂

perenniallymessy · 12/06/2024 16:31

I laughed hysterically through my last dental clean, not sure they were expecting that! It wasn't comfortable but it wasn't painful either, more teeth on edge type feeling. But all the slurping noises made me quite hysterical for some reason.

DS asked if they'd given me laughing gas.

Spirallingdownwards · 12/06/2024 16:33

It's awful and far worst than the dentist.

Ridiculous24 · 12/06/2024 16:33

It was like she was picking limescale off a tap! No regard! She said they weren't even that bad!

stayathomer · 12/06/2024 16:35

Watched my son at the hygienist the other day and I wanted to scream ‘take me instead!!😅’ He walked out in a daze- I’d warned him it wasn’t her brushing his teeth but I think he thought I was messing

NeverDropYourMooncup · 12/06/2024 16:36

Depends if you're having a scale and polish or root planing, really.

I enjoy not having to talk, think or do anything but let them get the coffee stains and missed bits of tartar off.

I wouldn't feel as relaxed with a dental abscess, tooth loss or heart disease from the bacteria, that's for sure.

drawnfrommemory · 12/06/2024 16:37

I don't mind them and wouldn't say I really enjoy them, but didn't really mind going.

Then at my last appointment my hygienist was delighted as he had some new fangled high pressure water device which was agony on my front teeth (which are never normally sensitive!) - I'm dreading the next one now.

junerella · 12/06/2024 16:37

Ooh I love it, my teeth feel so clean afterwards. I get two standard appointments a year though as part of my dentistry package so they're never bad enough to warrant pain.

Anonym00se · 12/06/2024 16:41

Our dentist doesn’t do hygienist appointments anymore. I just stay at home and scratch my gums with a pin instead.

Namechangedforthis25 · 12/06/2024 19:14

i definitely think the hygienist was lying when she told me to relax or that she was taking the mick (just not nice at all)!

I don't anything about a dental hygienist appointment remotely relaxing!

Paying at the end kind of spoils the effect, I have to admit.

SoupChicken · 12/06/2024 19:26

Who told you it would be relaxing and why did you believe them?

TheMithrasDirective · 12/06/2024 19:42

I go every 3 months and even though it doesn't hurt any more (I now use interdental brushes religiously) I still dread it. I dig my nails into my palm and concentrate on that instead of what's going on in my mouth. Sort of displacing the fear onto something I'm in control of, I guess.

knockknockw · 12/06/2024 19:44

Who the hell thinks a visit to the hygienist is relaxing?! I dread it every time
