Why is climate change not a bigger election issue?

Forget tax on private schools, it is going to be 43 degrees in Athens today, over 40 on Greek Islands in last week: huge risk of wildfires. The UK regularly floods due to unnaturally high rainfall , which gives water companies the excuse to pump raw rewage into rivers and beaches. Where is Starmer on this one ? Too busy smashing the gangs ?

It's too big. And too late.

Lentilweaver · 12/06/2024 12:29

@ComtesseDeSpair I also don't eat meat. I won't claim its because of climate change though. I suppose it helps.
I am very worried for my children and also for family who live in Asia.

Developing nations face flooding because corrupt governments pocket cash they take in bribes to let people steal land that should be flood plains and build there. Bushfires happen because of arson. We get more flooding in this country because our incompetent corrupt government has stopped dealing with drainage.

The climate is changing, but the stuff that people keep regurgitating is happening because governments are stealing taxpayers money that should be spent on public infrastructure and blaming the climate for it. And people fall for the climate line rather than holding the corrupt thieves in power to account.

SeverinaVichenza · 12/06/2024 12:31

Oh I wholeheartedly agree, those poors need to know their place and take a few less holidays a year so that I can jet off to Malibu with the hubby and 3 kids, and nanny, I’m a philanthropist you see. I make at least 27 social media posts a year about the climate so I’m doing my part.

midgetastic · 12/06/2024 12:31

The sad thing is things like cost of living , housing and health will both be worse in the mid to long term because of climate change

It's underneath everything but not immediate enough to be a vote winner - we are short term thinkers

What politicians ( who should be the brightest and best) should be doing and saying is we have a plan to improve the housing and cost of living crisis ( plural so?) that at the same time helps the climate crisis

Such things are possible

Urgh2302 · 12/06/2024 12:32

I’m in Ireland, and we’ve just seen Green Party losses in local and European elections.

It seems that Green policies are not popular with voters; they’re perceived as making things (fuel etc.) more expensive... more immediate concerns seem to be immigration and cost of living. Nevermind the mass migration we’ll see with billions of people being displaced as a direct result of this crisis

Papyrophile · 12/06/2024 12:32

Because in a country that contributes less than 1% of global emissions I am not inclined to waste money on pointless legislation and enforcement to bring it down. It is a distraction and the real polluters are elsewhere.

mjf981 · 12/06/2024 12:35

Because there is no answer that is palatable. And certainly none that will be vote winners. So we ignore it and head towards the abyss.
Ultimately, we will destroy ourselves in the near future and in the process make the world uninhabitable for humans. When we inevitably all die off, the world can rest reset and heal itself. We're a scurge.

DogInATent · 12/06/2024 12:36

Because.. the FOTM are the War on Motorists, anti-cycling, it's all a hoax, it's all chemtrails, the earth is flat, Net Zero is going to cost more than doing nothing, etc..

Remember, politics at general elections are all about the lowest common denominator. The kid at the back of the class that used to chew crayons now has a vote, and it's worth just as much as yours.

This is precisely why elections should only be for university educated middle class voters who understand the true gravity of what we are in store for if we don’t do something! My chauffeur told me that the working class have about 6 children each anyway so can’t they just eat a few of them and save a bit of money that way, which can go to my philanthropy green causes?

Catza · 12/06/2024 12:37

I think Reform has a lot to say about that.... unfortunately it very much aligns with what @MiniBakers is feeling.

Who has got so much time to waste? To read a Mickey Mouse wishlist of pointless virtue signalling.

it is costed out just as thoroughly as any other manifesto

ALovelyCupOfNameChange · 12/06/2024 12:37

The irony being climate change will drive immigration, it will drive food scarcity, food costs and food poverty.

Helloworld56 · 12/06/2024 12:39

ByCupidStunt · 12/06/2024 12:27

I think it's too late to do anything about it now anyway, so it's become a bit of a non issue.

Agree. Why do some people still think that using an electric car, or recycling their yoghurt pots will make the tiniest bit of difference to the Earth's systems?

Money will always be the priority. Look what happened during lockdown when planes were grounded. Clear blue skies everywhere, but did anyone say, 'Oh, it would be better for the planet if we banned air travel?' No, of course they didn't.

We've collectively brought this on ourselves. No amount of political tinkering is going to make the slightest difference.

justtryingg · 12/06/2024 12:39

The electorate does not care.

That's why it's essential to have international organisations keeping countries and their government to some sort of accountability.

ll09sm · 12/06/2024 12:41

Has anyone wondered why the biggest proponents of climate change annihilism have the highest carbon footprint?

Since they seem to be so convinced by the their that climate catastrophe is around the corner, why are they doing they exact opposite to what they preach to others. If you strongly believed that ingesting position would kill you and you spend all your time screaming at others to not touch that poison, why would you go around downing gallons of the stuff yourself? Openly.

The straw that broke the back of this propaganda camel was when tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of climate change tourists…sorry activists, landed in Dubai last year for Cop. Many flew in on private jets, staying in five star hotels, attending climate change parties. And then it was revealed that the organizers were using the conference to do oil deals. As if Emma Thompson, Leonardo Dicaprio and Prince Harry flying around on private jets to tell people to take fewer holidays and give up their cars wasn’t hilarious enough.

You could not make this shit up if you tried.

But sure, you buying a second designer bag instead of a new one or eating quorn one day a week makes you feel better. So you must do it.

midgetastic · 12/06/2024 12:46

The climate crisis is real

Do the best you can even if it's not perfect

Remember also that most climate people don't say "ban all flying and live in sack cloth and ashes "

You do have to get heads together to make meaningful change - so flying to COP isn't wrong in itself

But yes they do lose respect when the deal with the oil people so much !

But also people use this to try and discredit everything- which is really dangerous

The issue being we ignore it now at our parallel as the more we push the issue down the road the more it will cost us in the long run. Food insecurity due to failing crops, mass migration due to parts of the world becoming uninhabitable, more war and fighting over lack of resources. But we can just stick our heads in the sand and carry on for the time being as normal. We have become a global economy and we will all feel the issues that are to come.

But I don't necessarily believe that individual political parties are going to be able to deal with the issues either.

kitteninabasket · 12/06/2024 12:50

Because sadly most people don’t care despite constantly moaning about the rain and cost of food. It’s one of the most important issues for me but the Green Party are rubbish, I can’t vote for them.

ll09sm · 12/06/2024 12:56

As far as the Green Party and other climate activists are concerned, anytime they say ‘trust the science’, be wary. Be very sceptical. These people telling us all to trust the science also think that men can be women just by wearing a dress, and don’t believe in safe spaces for women.

So folks, this is how far their understanding of science extends.

We will carry on for a bit, tinkering around the edges, then when the changing climate makes life uncomfortable enough, green policies will be a vote winner. But by that time it will really be too late to head off the worst effects.

I’m GC but this is just a ridiculous reach. Grow up.
