Help me work out why my 3yo is saying 'silly wanker'

firstpregnancy1 · 12/06/2024 12:08

My son is 3.5yo. He has just started randomly saying 'wanker' 'silly wanker' and what sometimes sounds like 'you're a wanker'.

I am not naive enough to rule out him having perhaps heard this language and copying it but it seems like he's actually trying to say something else as his speech isn't the clearest for age 3.5

I'm 100% confident he's not heard it at home as we genuinely just don't use that word but he does go to nursery and is around other kids at parks etc.

At first it sounded like he was saying 'one car' and it still does sound like one car more than wanker but when I tried to ask him if he was saying one car he said no.

I asked him a few times who says that as he's usually quite good at telling tales about kids who hit or are naughty at nursery but he just said 'I say it' , until today he said 'Randall says it' . He's just got into watching monsters inc and monsters university and I know lots of films try to do silly play on words to appeal to adult audiences which usually goes over little kids heads, and so I'm considering if he's heard Randall saying something similar and am asking for help trying to hopefully work out what!

As I said, it may well be he's just heard the word somewhere, but it's bugging me thinking he's trying to say something else and I can't work out what!

Thanks in advance

@MiniBakers
''
You’re missing the point. You don’t need to tell him not to say it (you shouldn’t do that even if he is swearing).

Just don’t give it any airtime.

Also why are you letting him watch films you haven’t already properly seen anyway?''

I wasn't asking for advice on how to deal with the issue if he is swearing. Nor did I ask for advice on whether to let my child watch certain films. I have watched monsters inc many many times , I just don't know the script by heart and am not entirely sure it's come from that anyway. Often other people have experienced similar or have an ear for this sort of thing.

Since he's sure it's from Randall I assume silly is "Sully" but I'm afraid I'm not sure about the wanker part Grin

My son’s first word was, without a word of a lie, “Borrocks.”

His Dad had taken him to a local park and a guy in front of them at the ice cream van dropped his 99, with the resultant expletive.

DS then proceeded to shout it loud & proud around Wimbledon Park (probably being egged on by his Dad), and when they returned home he was positively singing the word!

And his actor father had corrected his bloody pronunciation and projection so he was properly bollocks-ing everywhere.

QforCucumber · 12/06/2024 12:53

haha we had a similar situation with Ds1 talking about the Autistic mouse and we couldn't for the life of us work out what he was talking about for a good 5/6 months, until one day on Hey Duggee they talked to the 'artistic mouse' and all was solved!

hope you find your answer on a rewatch of the movie hah

There's a character called Waxford? Silly Waxford? Sully Waxford?

ChocolateChipMuffin2016 · 12/06/2024 13:03

My son calls a walking stick a wanker, I have corrected him many, many times and yet he still calls it a wanker, I have NO IDEA where it came from but unfortunately it has stuck!

TheDogIsInCharge · 12/06/2024 13:03

My son had a little toy laptop thing and when you pressed the sock picture it was supposed to sound "sock" in an irritating American accent but really really sounded like fuck.

Cue many many months of my son putting his fucks on every day, taking his fucks off, losing his fuck etc

We had 'masturbate' for a while. Shouted frequently while out 😱

turned out to be a new teachers name that he just seemed to like the sound of (Mr Bates)

I've got a bit of an ear issue at the moment and people on TV are swearing a lot! Except they aren't! I'm just mishearing them 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

you'll get there!!

AmelieTaylor · 12/06/2024 13:08

My daughter was adamant that Guinea Pigs make the sound 'wank wank wank' and would joyously sing it out regularly.

DP had to spend an entire trip round Sainsburys once with DD shouting "Bugger Daddy! Bugger Daddy!" at the top of her voice.

I'd asked her to pick up some burgers for me as she left. DP hadn't heard me, DD had, and was most irate that DP wasn't getting me any burgers!

My nephew age 3 said bright and breezily 'Thank you Bastard!' to a waiter in a restaurant.

He had earlier been asking who different people were as he took a keen interest in learning what people do for a living. His dad had referred to the people serving drinks and food as bar staff. 😬

I love it! Sully Waxford. Mystery solved.

My son was chanting "Silly old bat" over and over.. when watching Winnie the Pooh a few days later realised he was saying "Silly old bear" from the song.

I'm properly laughing at this.

My colleague's toddler once crossly announced that he'd been told off at preschool for something to do with 'a fucking knife'.

Eventually, after some slightly panicked questioning, they managed to work out that he had been told off for eating a hot meal with his fingers, rather than using his fork and knife.

I remember my grandmother telling me slightly coyly “ we normally say knife and fork.”

Yup, my DS loves vehicles especially trucks. Except it comes out with an f instead of a t. It's rather embarrassing when he got excited about the "big trucks" when we're out and about.
He also likes clocks, especially "big enormous" ones. Again, he can't quite pronounce the l.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 12/06/2024 15:31

I'm heavily invested OP and I hope you find out.

My own DS has a speech delay and auditory processing issues and recently was asking for Peppa Pig and the vagina shop.

It took a lot more brain power than I care to admit to realise he meant Mr Bull and the China shop.
