Do people leave builders in the house and give them a key?

I want to get some work done but it's going to take 2 weeks. I can't take 2 weeks off work. Do people just let builders have a key to come and go?

Yes!

I tend to have decorating done when on holiday

My husband is a tradesman. He's not a thief or unreliable or irresponsible. He's met many unreasonable and unreliable customers though... including those who boast to their friends that they "never pay a tradesman in full" even if the work has been completed to their satisfaction.

There definitely are some dodgy builders about, like there are dodgy cleaners, window cleaners, mechanics, lawyers, hairdressers, house sitters, dog walkers, child minders, policemen, doctors etc etc.

Being a tradesman does not make someone a thief, undesirable or irresponsible like some people on here seem to think.

Do your research and get recommendations and references. Ask to see insurance etc.

Also. Remember that the tradesman is trusting you to pay him at the end of the job. They're literally dependent on you not being untrustworthy so that they can pay themselves and feed their families. This means they're quite unlikely to rob your house.

A lot of customers seem to forget that the trust goes both ways.

Yes, I did. Because the noise got too much to bear.
Plus, they had taken most of the upstairs of the house off, so anyone could just climb in off the scaffolding if they wanted.

Wouldn't use those builders again. Not because I didn't trust them morally, just because they were shit and slow!

Yes I do.

I have fuck all worth stealing anyway 😂

Yes of course they do. We had an extension built which took 3 months. Not only did I let the builders get on with it, I also let them use my loo which, according to most of MN, you should never do

We didn't feel comfortable doing that as had lots of trades coming and going so always made sure one of us was here.

Yeah I can't do that. It's only me and I have to go to work

Why do you not let them use the loo? Where are they meant to go?

Yep I do. I’ve got a key safe and I give them the code and let them crack on
