Am I being massively petty? Or would you pursue this out of principal?

I received a code to use at an online retailer to receive a free father's day gift. All I will have to pay is the £3 postage.

The gift is pretty tacky but my young son liked it and wanted us to get it for his dad. It is not something I would have bought for it's full price.

So I ordered the item, which arrived within a few days.

I then noticed that the £3 had been charged twice on my credit card. I notified customer services and asked to be reimbursed for the duplicate £3 charge.

Instead of just doing this, the customer services rep keeps saying that they haven't had the money so they can't reimburse me, despite the fact I sent a screen shot of my credit card statement. I have asked to deal with someone else but she refuses because she is the manager.

I don't particularly need the £3 but it is the principal of it. I have effectively paid double. Considering the amount is so low, I would've thought they would just repay it. Anyone would think it was coming directly out of the customer service rep's pocket.

I have continued to be polite in my correspondence but I'm on the verge of exploding. I appreciate that most would have given up by now.

YABU - You are being petty. Just forget about it!
YANBU ‐ You are right to fight for your £3. Don't stop until it has been reimbursed!

Have you contacted your credit card company to make sure it's not an error at their end?

Flopsythebunny · 11/06/2024 10:50

Just claim it back through the card company

thebluebeyond · 11/06/2024 10:52

dont let them get away with it!

TuesdayWhistler · 11/06/2024 10:53

If they did the same with everyone, that'd make them a tidy sum.

Indeed. I’m usually dubious of free/cheap stuff with “vouchers.

What does she mean “they don’t have the money”? A threat of trading standards will probably get your refund.

Hinkuy · 11/06/2024 10:59

Is it actually fully on your statement or still in the pending transactions?

OnceICaughtACold · 11/06/2024 11:00

Talk to your card company, I’ve had similar before and it’s been an issue with the transaction that’s then been reversed. If they say the seller has actually taken the cost twice, then keep pursuing it with them.

LunaBunaD · 11/06/2024 11:12

I get it, but I couldn't find myself on the verge of exploding over £3

It's not so much the £3 that is causing me to explode, but the complete lack of any kind of acknowledgement from the customer services rep.

Yes, fully on my statement and has been for over a week.

Claim it back from the credit card company and let them sort out the retailer.

As I say I get it, but I wouldn't be arsed chasing it. Wrong answer I know, but I have enough going on.

Not yet. I was kind of hoping for a quick and easy reimbursement from the company. I will check with the credit card co at some point.

Oh right in that case just call your credit card company and they'll claim it back. Easy peasy job done.

But if the error is with the credit card company and not the retailer then the retailer is never going to refund you money they haven't received.

Check with your credit card company then you will know who to pursue for the money.

DadJoke · 11/06/2024 12:45

It seems like you have notified them and they've refused to comply.

Say unless they refund the money with three working days you'll do a chargeback (that is, ask the credit card company for a refund) Do that, if they don't refund you. Chargebacks are an absolute PIA for retailers, and cost much more than £3, as well as affecting the retailer's standing with the bank.

That's the kind of petty revenge I can get behind.

I got two order confirmations (both stating the same order number) so assumed it was the retailer not the credit card co. I will check with them though. To be honest it's the complete lack of customer service from the retailer that is winding me up. They haven't acknowledged my problem and have made no suggestion how to rectify it. I quite liked some of the other stuff on their website but I definitely will not be ordering from them again. Plus obviously its only £3 so I feel quite bitter about spending so much time on it...but I can't let it go!

longtompot · 11/06/2024 15:27

Contact your credit card company and explain the issue. They'll be able to tell you if it has gone to the retailer or not. If it has, you can just get a charge back.

GinToBegin · 11/06/2024 15:40

Clearly you’re only going to get more aggravation from the company, don’t waste more time or headspace trying to get them to do something they can’t/won’t do.

I would call the credit card company to request a chargeback on the duplicated payment. For £3, I would expect it to be an automatic refund to you.

DottyLottieLou · 14/06/2024 05:44

Claim it back via your card. It's the principle. They've probably done the same to everyone.

LovelyDaaling · 14/06/2024 05:49

The credit card company can exert more pressure on the company than you can. Get your refund from your credit card company.

Bettysnow · 14/06/2024 06:03

This has happened to me twice with a particular garage with both payments having been made at night. I have bought fuel and it's been charged twice to the card however the second payment has disappeared from my transactions overnight?

CosyLemur · 14/06/2024 08:39

This happened to me a lot when I ran a small business people would tell me I'd charged them twice - my records would show I'd only charged them once. I'd only get the money once - but customers quite rightly wouldn't believe me (I wouldn't have before if a company said that)
But it was the credit card company putting the payment on their account twice not me I ended up out of pocket because the credit card companies would always reimburse their customer by taking the money back from me.
I stopped taking credit card payments. But then noticed double payments on my credit card - always small unnoticeable amounts that unless you scrunise your statements you probably wouldn't notice.
Since then I've got rid of my credit cards totally - I really don't trust credit card companies anymore!

JWhipple · 14/06/2024 09:40

I don't think it's a good use of your time for £3. If you've already spent an hour on it, compare it to what you'd get for working that hour.
Just leave a bad review warning others. Just chalk it up to you spent £3 on a gift plus £3 postage.
