In our local news today is a story of a welsh school teacher who has been suspended for 2 years for calling a child a twat. AIBU to think this is harsh? Is there more to the story?

It seems like there was a lot more to it,

Mrs Walsh's behaviour towards colleagues was 'intimidating, undermining, derogatory, and bullying in nature' to colleagues, the committee of the Education Workforce Council (EWC) found.

Alittlefrustrated · 09/06/2024 20:00

I would of been suspended if I'd called a patient that.

IseultHam · 09/06/2024 20:12

Twat isn't offensive it's just like twit here. Also used for 'stop twatting about'.

We do live near where the owners of Twatley Manor changed it to Whatley which didn't curry favour with the locals.

Well I'd assume the school has similar policy for pupils who use similar language and expel them?

One would like to think so but we all know the reality! I once told a 14 year old girl to stop fooling about, her mother complained that I'd called her spoilt brat a fool!

In a way it is, people claiming its snowflake behaviour, although I did say there was more to it than one word in this case.
But I wouldn't have accepted twat from any of our kids and certainly would never use it in a professional setting or even jokingly, it is way more offensive than twit. Yet I'd jokingly call someone a daft bugger.

insidenumber9 · 09/06/2024 20:22

Good. Kick her to the kerb. I would if it was my offspring she was calling a twat. She sounds vile.

I seem to recall Fawlty Towers being called Flowery Twats in one opening sequence.

BurbageBrook · 09/06/2024 20:23

Sounds like it was not a lovely teacher losing their shit on a one off occasion. Sounds like a pattern of unprofessional behaviour so, as an ex teacher, I do think the suspension seems fair.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 09/06/2024 20:23

I expect higher standards from a fully grown adult in a professional role than I do from a half baked teenager.

I’d be pretty miffed if a teacher called my child a twat even if they were being a little twat. It’s not appropriate. In the same way I’d expect to be sanctioned if I called a colleague a twat. Two years suspension seems extreme though so assuming it wasn’t a one off.

As well as being miffed, can we assume that you would make an effort to correct your child's twattish behaviour?

Theonlyreasonwhyyoushouldbe · 09/06/2024 20:26

Twat means different things in different areas.

Essentially they’ve either called them an idiot or a c**t.

Ooops quoted the wrong person, sorry!

Correct.

Was the child a twat?

😂

BingoMarieHeeler · 09/06/2024 20:29

God I would raise an eyebrow at that being said in the staff room/down the pub but definitely find that unacceptable within earshot of child/parent, in the classroom etc. It’s equivalent to dick/arsehole not idiot.

My sister calls her kids gits and even that really shocks me 😮

Absolutely! I back the teachers all the time when the kids break rules (or are little twats!) but still wouldn’t expect the teacher to call them if. Just as some of my colleagues are twats, but I can’t just call them that.

Irishmama100 · 09/06/2024 20:33

Until about a year ago I thought calling someone a twat meant they were being silly🙈🙈
I genuinely think most Irish people think
that is what it means. National radio presenter this week asked a woman on his show was her son a twat or a brat. He apologised at the end of the show for use of bad language as someone probably had to point out the meaning.

AmpleFatball · 09/06/2024 20:34

BlackBean2023 · 09/06/2024 19:33

Yes, but you could go and get another job.

This is a massive overreaction unless there's a back story. I hold a senior exec position in a MAT and can categorically say that if this was an isolated incident in a secondary school it would be a written warning. In a primary school possibly a final warning or a strong recommendation to resign but we would not refer this to TRA for a misconduct hearing.

No wonder no one wants to be a bloody teacher!

She already has another job; looks like she left the school 3 years ago after attracting a number of complaints from colleagues for rudeness and aggression, and now runs a nursery.

But yet nothing happens when children call teachers fucking slags.

Yeah this happened to me, barely any punishment so said child escalated behaviour from there...
Often think twat but never said it out loud 🤣 Do occasionally use the old There We Are Then.

RosaRoja · 09/06/2024 19:48

Do you remember the Tory Education Secretary Andrea Jenkins giving the finger to people outside Downing Street? Is she up for election in your area?

Yes mine unfortunately! Now she is a bit of a twat 😂

RosaRoja · 09/06/2024 20:40

@FawnFrenchieMum good reply 😂

Notaflippinclue · 09/06/2024 20:45

Let's all bring our children up to be less twatty towards teachers - no wonder they are leaving the profession

sixtyandsomething · 09/06/2024 20:47

that is a horrible word, on a par with c**t. I would expect to lose my job

The teacher was a twat towards her colleagues as well, which contributed to the suspension.
