I'm terrified of these urinary issues I'm having - what could this be?!

For nearly two weeks, I've had weird (what seemed like) UTI symptoms. I've never had a UTI before (early 20s).
This week these symptoms have gotten worse. UTI tests (all 3) have come back clear, 'just a few white blood cells, no infection'.

I feel like I need a wee 24/7. Pain in my abdomen. Pain in my back.
When I do go for a wee, it's usually a weak stream and not a lot.
I keep getting shooting pains in my urethra.
Feeling nauseous.
Feeling like I'm leaking urine when I'm walking.
(No pain when I'm actually weeing).

Getting the doctors to help with the 'all clear' tests is difficult. I've tried painkillers (don't make a difference), cystopurin, a thrush tablet (as advised by pharmacist).

I've got horrendous health anxiety so I've had panic attacks about this and that makes me worried that I could be psychologically making these symptoms worse by fixating on them.

Can anyone help if they have similar experience? I'm spending so much time crying because I just desperately want to feel normal again!

We have a specialist urinary nurse at our doctor's and she was incredible when I saw her. See if yours has one or ask for a referral if not.

@lockost a 3 day course was ample for me. Although the pharmacist did say if the symptoms persisted to go to my GP and get some more. The only side affect I had with them was a constant dizziness for the first day and a half. I can't remember if I felt dizzy the last time I took them as well

It makes me so angry that yet again women's health is at the bottom of the pile. Doctors KNOW that these tests are only 50% accurate and if they don't then they SHOULD know. So many women being left in pain, sometimes leading to chronic pain, because UTIs are not treated properly.

My very experienced urologist said to me that if I have symptoms of a UTI (and I've had enough and know my body well enough) then I have a UTI and need a full course of antibiotics. Thankfully after his strongly worded letter to my GP I just have to call my GP and he prescribes me the antibiotics that work for me. It makes me so angry that doctors and pharmacists are relying on these really inaccurate tests to tell women with UTI symptoms that they don't have a UTI.

I'm sure that was the new guidelines
My GP says if you feel like you have a UTI, you have one and I get a min of 5 days of antibiotics

Nitrofuarantin can cause neurological problems, I had repeated courses for chronic infection over the space of 9 months, I lost the feeling in my legs & feet, I'm now in a wheelchair. It causes neurotoxicity which damages peripheral nerves, mine is irreversible, my medical records now have do not prescribe Nitrofuarantin on them.

That’s awful, I’m so sorry 😞

Thanks, I just try to educate other people about it now, there are so many people who have been prescribed it & have ended up permanently disabled, my consultant originally thought I had MS until he saw on my medical records how many times I had been prescribed in a short space of time. I'm surprised they are still able to use it.

@hippospot let me know how you get on!
I'm not sure why they only give a 3-day course if so many are saying 3 days isn't enough?

I had the treatment directly to my bladder following a cystoscopy. Weekly for 8 weeks. That was 7 years ago and I get the odd urine infection however nothing in comparison!

I took it recently whilst pregnant - that’s scary!

@lockost how are you doing?

lockost · 15/06/2024 18:22

@PatienceOfEngels all over the place!
The bladder symptoms have mostly subsided apart from feeling like I'm going to wee myself when I'm walking.

I'm having a complete spiral that I'm having a prolapse now! I definitely need help with anxiety right now. The panic attacks are taking over.

Go see your GP as soon as possible to get this sorted out.

PatienceOfEngels · 16/06/2024 06:34

It does sound like you might have pelvic floor issues. I was also very emotional at the thought I might be suffering prolapse but the physio and gp were able to reassure me this wasn't the case. I hope you can get an appointment to get checked out.

aodirjjd · 16/06/2024 06:39

White blood cells ARE an indication of infection. The threshold for lab cultures is actually really high so they can say there is “negative” infection result because they haven’t counted enough cells but it doesn’t mean there’s none. I’m sorry op i reckon you’ve just had a mild infection for ages . They tried to tell me a uti was psychosomatic when I was pissing blood.

try d mannose as well as the antibiotics

Miriad · 16/06/2024 07:13

After you’ve taken antibiotics any further urine tests won’t be reliable. You get what’s called sterile pyuria, which means you have white blood cells in the urine but they can’t find any infection.

lockost · 16/06/2024 08:04

@PatienceOfEngels yes, I'm hoping this is more possible than an actual prolapse.

I regularly walk dogs that pull on the lead and I wonder if this has weakened my pelvic floor muscles. I notice that my natural posture now is leaning backwards a bit because I spend so much time countering the weight of the other side of the lead!
