To be worried about LinkedIn stalker

My partner has received the weirdest message and letter from someone on LinkedIn. First someone connected with them. Then they sent my partner a message to say they were their worst nightmare and they were going to hit their ball out of court. Then last week, my partner received a letter at work with a picture of a ball. Nothing else. It wasn’t just a picture, it was backed and laminated, and someone had clearly spent time on it. Am I being unreasonable to think they are related?

Is the LinkedIn a real account with a name or a fake- looking one?
"Hitting the ball out of the court" usually means you've done an outstanding job so what is that supposed to mean? They've done a great job of being your DP's worst nightmare?

Screenshot all the messages but don't engage.

I think the account name was something to do with an octopus. He is going to talk to his boss on Monday and then contact the police. I didn’t know if we were being unreasonable to be a bit worried. We are both trying to pretend to each other that it’s all fine.

I’m not sure about LinkedIn but can you block someone? Tell him to keep any screenshots of messages and the physical letter (if anymore arrive). Creepy!

This sounds like it could be a current or former colleague trying to frighten him. Can he think of anyone who might want to do this? Any profile photos or usernames you can reverse image search or Google?

Just because LI is a work-related site doesn't mean that the person is necessarily a colleague - anyone can make an account on there. It should actually show how you're connected before you can actually see each other - did your DP look at that before accepting the request?
I wouldn't necessarily block if you're trying to work out who it is.

Disable your account

TheTartfulLodger · 08/06/2024 22:59

Are you able to say exactly what the message said word for word? There are often clues with spelling if it is generated using AI

cherish123 · 08/06/2024 22:59

Sorry not your account.
Get him/her to close their account.

Agree with this. Go to boss and HR who will advise.

Can you rewrite this either as received or at least making one of the "they's he for your partner?

Does your partner get involved in office "banter"
Some people think practical jokes are hilarious

HelpIdonotknowwhattodo · 08/06/2024 23:07

Yes he has blocked them. Glad it’s not just me that thinks it is creepy.

I can’t remember exactly what words that my partner said the message on LinkedIn and the letter said. It said either, “I am your worst nightmare!” or “I am going to be your worst nightmare,” or something similar.

Good point. We hadn’t thought it could be a joke. I shall mention that. Thanks

Also potentially mistaken identity.
Happened to a friend last week. Some was looking for someone with same/similar name in same area because that person had scammed them. They found my friend on FB, assumed it was him, and started "naming and shaming" even though he was the wrong person.

If they found your OH on LI and found his company they could easily send a letter there...easier than getting a home address.

HelpIdonotknowwhattodo · 08/06/2024 23:33

Good point about mistaken identity. Hopefully it is m not some weirdo.
