Does anyone here drink alcohol and take codeine?
I've not drank in years and I just fancied one tonight, I started to drink and felt drunk very quickly, thought this is strange, and then read you can't drink and take codeine at the same time it's very dangerous, I'm panicking now

Yep. I regularly do. I find it’s about personal limits and how it makes you feel. I can’t drive when I take prescription strength codeine (due to a chronic health condition). A drink or two doesn’t seem to have a massive impact either way.

Miriad · 08/06/2024 20:31

You can’t take them at the same time. Stop drinking? If you can’t stop drinking then that’s a bigger problem.

Sunnycoffeedrinker · 08/06/2024 20:34

Its best not to drink alcohol if Ur on medication as U can feel drunk very quickly plus it would probably make U fell nausiaus

Did you even read the post?

weareallcats · 08/06/2024 20:36

Gosh, I wouldn’t with co-codamol - I think both codeine and paracetamol interact with alcohol? I have with ibuprofen, but wouldn’t make a habit of it.

weareallcats · 08/06/2024 20:37

Just stop drinking op and wait for it to wear off before going to sleep.

TheShellBeach · 08/06/2024 20:37

I do!
Yes, they affect one another but it isn't dangerous.

Revelatio · 08/06/2024 20:39

I have. I have always been prescribed them after a miscarriage and have often fancied a glass of wine then. I would take the evening dose just before bed and have never felt untoward.

ChangedForThisAgain · 08/06/2024 20:39

Sorry to put this out there, but the misinformation on this post is outrageous. Have you ever been prescribed cocodamol? Suffered with chronic, ongoing pain? Here’s the official NHS advice from the NHS website. It supports what my consultant said - if it makes you feel funny, don’t drink alcohol with them.

It is really as simple as that.

helpme1234 · 08/06/2024 20:40

I didn't take my co codamol with alcohol, I took it like 3 hours ago now, think I'll stop now and wait to feel normal again, won't be doing that again

It is dangerous, it can cause respiratory depression and it will make you drowsy but 1 drink will be fine if you stop drinking.

Sunnycoffeedrinker · 08/06/2024 20:55

Take no notice of the negative poster ,just drink water to balance it out and eat something ,I havnt drank for years but remember the feeling of tablets and alcohol they don't mix well

Nopet · 08/06/2024 21:00

It depends on how you feel. I can drink a couple of glasses of wine and take co codamol before going to bed . No problems for me . As you don’t normally drink alcohol it’s probably better to drink lots of water and eat some toast .

Crikey, calm down! OP is not a problematic drinker 🙄

Sunnycoffeedrinker · 08/06/2024 21:05

Granyogre, that ain't going to happen unless U have loads of drinks ,two co codimal and a beer isn't going to put someone into deep depression ,what book did U read that from ,unless Ur chatting from personal experiences

Respiratory depression isn’t ‘depression’, it’s when you stop breathing (usually in your sleep) and is often the result of taking/mixing drugs.

Sunnycoffeedrinker · 08/06/2024 21:13

Prob similar to sleep apnea then ,when obese people stop breathing in there sleep ,cheers for correcting me I didn't know that

Sunnycoffeedrinker · 08/06/2024 21:16

Menameno ,are U a nurse or had personal experience of mixing drugs and alcohol, I only ask as U seem very informative on this topic

@Sunnycoffeedrinker My DM is a recovering addict/alcoholic. She almost died on a number of occasions, thankfully all a long time ago now. I spent most of my childhood checking her breathing when she was asleep.

Feelingmentallyunsettled · 08/06/2024 21:42

I never drank if I had taken paracetamol/ asprin/ co codamol or anything similar because as I understood it there was a danger of liver damage if you did so.

Sunnycoffeedrinker · 08/06/2024 21:49

@Menomeno sorry to read that , 🙏 for u
