To think a political party currently in power having an election manifesto is actually kind of pointless?

Regardless of party, but couldn’t it be argued that they should have been doing whatever it is they’re promising to do all along? In making all these election promises aren’t they just highlighting areas where they’ve failed?

Well, the conservatives have been in power since 2010.

In their manifesto then were:

Develop academy schools (largely done)
Reading test at age 6 (done)
Elected police commissioners (done)
Right to request flexible working for parents (done)
Deliver olympics in 2012 (done)

So a lot of the stuff in their manifesto then have happened.

Some hasn't and some got overtaken by events. Either way they need a new one

Yes I need some new toilet paper

And in 2019? Did they promise 3 leaders in 4 years? Rwanda? Breaking pretty much every public service?

And the 2019 manifesto due to which they are currently in power?

The new Manchester to Leeds line? HS2? Democracy commission? Improve social housing, 50k more nurses, net zero by 2050 ... no national insurance rises. Not seeing much happening.

itsgettingweird · 08/06/2024 20:48

Yes they need one.

They've been on power since 2010. You don't just have a few policies and then when done live rent free at the head of the country.

The latest manifesto was 2019.

What have they done to meet that? Do they even know what's on it? I'm not even sure this lot could find their arse to wipe it if they had a shit.

Levelling up?
HS2?
Net zero?

To name a few

Manifestos are pledges that don’t need to be kept after they’ve got you the job.

Ask Starmer.

VickyEadieofThigh · 08/06/2024 21:23

This one made me hoot with laughter: "Deliver olympics in 2012 (done)".

Like it might not have happened. Like Labour wouldn't have "delivered" it. Like the infrastructure wasn't already set up for it.

Octavia64 · 08/06/2024 21:25

To be clear, I don't think the tories have done a good job and I'm not supporter.

However the 2019 Tory manifesto was significantly blown off course by a pandemic.

I don't actually think it's fair to hold them to those promises.

I do think that there are many many other reasons not to vote Tory in the coming election.

L1ttledrummergirl · 08/06/2024 22:02

The pandemic is a straw argument. We had a pandemic plan which was tested in 2016 and failed. Rather than working to improve this, the conservatives said we had the best pandemic planning in the world.

They then threw out the plan, ignored everything we've ever learnt as a country, and proceeded to enrich their mates under the guise of covid.

They absolutely should be held to their 2019 commitment.
