Why can't you use the oyster system to tap in and out every where?

Just that really?
Why don't they want us to tap in and out?

There are fare zones on the Underground. Imagine how many you would need if it applied country wide. Parts of Cornwall in zone 1000 or so.

re the railways, if they’re renationalised we could potentially use the same system of payment

That is actually an amazing and revolutionary idea! I want to use my library card to borrow stuff from Argos and B&Q

Not quite there yet but...

@Blarn it can. Because 50% live in the circle doesn't mean they are living in the Channel or France. It's neater to draw a circle which includes a little piece of France (where few to none live). It's like the circle that shows where most of the world's population lives (Valeriepieris circle). It includes some sea. Doesn't mean anyone lives there. Brilliantmaps.com is worth a look!

Ha ha ha our train ‘station’ is just a plastic bus stop with new logos on it there isn’t even a timetable sign.

Talkinpeace · 09/06/2024 19:34

If I buy a return bus ticket, it does not work on all the buses on the route
because they are operated by rival companies

And in rural areas where buses are measured "per week" not "per hour"
the luxury of Oyster is a dream

Needmorelego · 09/06/2024 19:39

@Talkinpeace London buses - despite being all coloured red - are actually several different bus companies (Stagecoach, Arriva etc)
They all agreed to join together and accept the joined up tfl/Oyster system.
It's really frustrating that the bus companies in large parts of the rest of the country don't do this.
I can't see any logical reasons why they don't.
I suppose that's something to ask the bus companies.

Talkinpeace · 09/06/2024 19:46

@needmorelego
London has compulsory franchising.
The bus companies are not being kind by obeying the London rules.
Look to the rest of the country to see what they would do if they could.

mondaytosunday · 09/06/2024 19:58

I have an over 60 oyster, as it's free. My DD has a student one so gets a third off tube and free bus. Don't do what I have done though, tap in with the oyster and tap out with my debit card by mistake - £6.50! Ouch!

Needmorelego · 09/06/2024 19:59

@Talkinpeace as I said - it's one for the bus companies to answer because I don't know how it all works.
But it makes life so much easier. It really does.
It's a shame all the bus companies in the UK don't do it.

Talkinpeace · 09/06/2024 20:08

Bus companies in non franchise areas are banned from collaborating.
Its not down to the bus companies
Its down to local government being given the power to force franchising.

London kept standard buses when Maggie abolished them in the rest of the country

Needmorelego · 09/06/2024 20:20

@Talkinpeace whatever the reason is - it would just be so much better if it was all linked.
Which is what the OP was saying in the first place.

Talkinpeace · 09/06/2024 20:22

Politicians need to change the law.

THose of us outside London have been penalised on public transport for decades

Needmorelego · 09/06/2024 20:24

@Talkinpeace definitely!
For a large part of the country public transport is dreadful (or non existent).

G123456789 · 09/06/2024 20:35

What's an shell fish got to do with knocking on things....is it some London centric thing?

Message to op...most of the population don't live in London, rarely if ever visit it and think it's a bit of a shit hole populated by grubby Oliver twist like urchins or Russian gangsters.

KrisAkabusi · 08/06/2024 19:34

Why don't they want us to tap in and out?

Interesting. Most conspiracy theorists think that "they" do want us to tap everywhere so we can be tracked!

Made me laugh when the tinfoil hatter insisted Covid and the consequential vaccinations were a massive plot to inject us all with tracking devices.

there’s no need. Everyone carries around at least one tracking device voluntarily, there’s no need to be sneaky about it 😂

Needmorelego · 09/06/2024 20:49

@G123456789 Oyster is just the name of an electronic payment card for public transport in London.
Other parts of the UK have their own versions.
According to Google Birmingham have "Swift" Cards. Edinburgh has "City Smart" cards.
And so on.....
They just aren't interchangeable over the UK.
It would be great if they were.
