Getting rid of toys

My kids are 14 and 9.

14yo obviously doesn't play with toys anymore but I never had to get rid of them because I had the youngest. The only stuff I've ever got rid of was the baby/toddler toys.

Youngest is now 9, doesn't really play at all with toys. She only plays if I get them out and encourage her to play with me but then she gets bored quickly. None of her friends have toys or play.

Is it time to get rid of them? DC9 doesn't seem fussed either way. I'd keep her teddies etc I just mean the typical toys you play with.

Sorry if this is a silly thread, I've never been in this situation and I don't want to accidentally traumatise DC somehow!!

Speak to them and see what they want to keep (if anything). We're in a very, very tiny house and I just don't have anywhere to keep DDx2 and DS' things now they're a bit older. We did a big 'keep' and 'go' session, and slowly we just clear more as they grow. Have a chat with them first and see if theres 1 or 2 special things that they want to keep, other than that things can be sold or donated to make room.

Also, I don't think it's a silly thread- I felt the same way ❤

I would definitely ask them I made a mistake with this and my DD was very upset. It might be that they don’t want to play with them but they want to hang onto something for sentimental reasons.

Yes, ask them

I was thinking the same about my DD’s stuff. She still does a lot of art stuff when friends come round so I’d keep all that, but I think I’ll take @Nannyogg134‘s advice and go through it all with her soon.

Maybe if there’s anything valuable (eg the Sylvanian stuff) we could sell it and she could keep the ££.

When you are young you don't care so much but as you get older you wish you had kept x,y or z. I certainly do, although you can always repurchase on ebay if you want !

I would talk to them and ask them. And also if anything is in really good condition and high quality like lego consider keeping it for the future as it may be worth something.

Sure I read on her a while back that a mum had asked their dc what they wanted ro getbrid of/ keep. Happily got rid of lots.
Now adults, and parents, they said they had wished they kept some of their stuff!! You may need to make some 'memory keepsake' choices just in case.
