To wonder how we ever did 5 days a week in an office?

I work hard and love my job (legal). Spent a day in the office today for the first time in months and honestly feel sick. The people flu! I couldn't go back. All those blokes in the City saying WFH was an "aberration" are deluded.

I get that some people love it and there's enough diversity in this world for everyone to find their niche but Oh My God am I glad I don't have to do the daily traipse any more.

Agree! I love wfh ! I get so much done, lunch break I can go for a run or get the laundry done. It is just brilliant on a Friday to finish at 5 and be enjoying a glass of wine at 5.01!

carsty · 07/06/2024 19:06

lol @OptimismvsRealism same here. I cant bear to think how id manage going back to the office 5 days a week and looking back, I dnt know how we even managed that😅.

stillavid · 07/06/2024 19:07

I think wfh works better for older people - honestly it would have been rubbish for me in my first post university job. Living in a shared house working from my room wouldn't have been fun.

OptimismvsRealism · 07/06/2024 19:07

And no stressful draining people around and needing to "perform working" in addition to actually working

Bliss!

Well quite a lot of us still do 5 days in an office ..

Thevelvelletes · 07/06/2024 19:07

And how many calls/emails go unanswered because of WFH policy particularly in public facilities such as HMRC, DVLA etc.

Loads, I reckon.

I'd say I get about three times as much done as I did in the office days. I think a lot of people are like me.

I suspect you quite literally could if it were the only way you could keep a roof over your head.

Well some "literally" have to.

Topofthemountain · 07/06/2024 19:12

Well you woke up, got ready, left the house, travelled and then, well, worked.

I mean it's not exactly a difficult achievement. Lots of us manage it fairly well.

By 'we' you mean 'I'

Icannoteven · 07/06/2024 19:12

OMG. I’ve just realised what has caused the massive reduction in my migraines the last few years! Its definitely since I’ve been WFH the majority of the time. I don’t know if it’s because I’m less tired, because I have more control over the lighting and noise of my environment at home or that I eat better/excercise better when I WFH but there has been about an 80 percent improvement of frequency AND intensity since I’ve been away from the office.

We’ll some of us don’t have the choice.

Miloandfreddy · 07/06/2024 19:13

WFH has changed my life.. I can take kids to school, once I finish I can start on dinner rather than an hour commute. Laundry done during lunch hour, no distractions from colleagues.. I am twice as efficient at my job and twice as happy. If I had to go back to the office 5 days a week honestly I would be distraught.

Their crap customer service is because they're under-resourced and under-staffed. It's a high pressure job for minimum wage. People aren't exactly biting their hands off to do it.

about 40% of UK employees actually: medics, carers, service personnel, caterers, transport, manufacturing….

It doesn’t but I don’t have the option!

mollyfolk · 07/06/2024 19:14

I love it as well. It’s the answer to being a working parent. I can drop them to activities in the afternoon, make dinner on my lunch break.

@Thevelvelletes - calls and emails should absolutely not go unanswered. WFH is definitely a privileged not an excuse for people to doss off and stuff like this needs to be monitored.

Orangello · 07/06/2024 19:14

the flexibility is the thing for me. I can pick up the kids, drop them to their clubs, finish work from home. No wraparound needed, it's brilliant.

No, I couldn't. I'm really lucky that the choice has come about now.

Wow. Some of us have no choice. It’s draining and full on but better than not having an income. Lucky you that you can earn a decent living working from home.
