Eating on Trains

likepebblesonabeach · 07/06/2024 14:42

I travel on the train daily to work, 30 mins each way. I've just came back from a 3 hour train journey and was shocked that a family of 4 got on with fish and chips. The whole carriage was stinking of fish and chips and the majority of passengers were on the train the whole journey so had to put up with this for 3 hours.
AIBU that if you travel on public transport you should be aware of those around you?

@ZiriForGood yeah it's not just eggs I make. Any shop bought ones/hard boiled eggs have a smell to them. You're likely nose blind to it and offending people next to you.

Hm.. I don't buy hard boiled eggs, so that might explain it. Thanks for the tip I will continue not buying them.

I googled the chemical process of the smell and it still seems the normal non-overcooked eggs should be fine.

yumyumyumy · 07/06/2024 23:03

@ZiriForGood I'd say most boiled eggs are "overcooked" by definition. They all smell. Soft boiled/fried etc aren't as pungent but you can't really take them in a lunchbox.

SunriseSunsets · 07/06/2024 23:07

Can't believe people think eggs have no smell they are literally one of the smelliest food especially hard boiled, as someone said they can have quite a farty smell hence "eggy farts" 😂 or saying something smells of rotten eggs. Horrible things. My son likes hard boiled eggs but I'd never allow him to take them to school for lunch because they stink and he would be made fun of, same for eggs sandwiches they are very antisocial!

I know, apparently it's your own fault for over cooking them too! Any boiled eggs stink. As soon as you open an egg sandwich or a boiled egg the farty smell wafts out.

EastEndQueen · 07/06/2024 23:13

Hard boiled eggs do smell yes: I love them and they are my go-to breakfast but if I’m out of the house I eat them whilst walking along the road to work/ sitting on a bench outside rather than in an enclosed room. In the same category as re-heating fish in the work microwave.

I think you are being very precious OP about eating on trains. People travel long distances, have busy lives, health conditions, children to feed, get caught out by the great British summer when they were hoping to have an outside picnic etc, etc. Part of public transport I’m afraid, babies cry, luggage gets in the way, bacon sandwiches smell. Such is life.

No time at all for the poster earlier calling people enjoying a McDonalds on the way home ‘disgusting pigs’. Horrid way to talk about people enjoying a few chips after an enjoyable evening. Live and let live.

Blimey, you should try living here in London when the schools finish around 3pm.

There's more chicken and chips on the bus than actual passengers.

😂😂Totally agree!

On long distance trains you can often order hot food to your seat, or at least you could pre-Covid. Or you can buy it from the buffet counter on trains that still have them.

In the good old BR days (and early days of privatisation) of course they still had dining cars with 3 course meals and silver service. Wonderful cooking smells wafting through the carriage.

There is clearly a tradition of eating hot food on long distance trains. People want a decent feed if they're travelling for hours, and it can't be compared to wolfing down a KFC during a 15 minute journey on the bus or Tube.

Still got full dining on some Welsh trains. No reheated rubbish, proper food cooked fresh: https://tfw.wales/ways-to-travel/rail/food-and-drink/first-class-dining/first-class

Eggs definitely stink

But Egg sandwiches are a classic part of an Afternoon Tea so hardly antisocial

Bringbackthebeaver · 08/06/2024 05:13

ZiriForGood · 07/06/2024 22:37

There is no rule like that. It is totally normal to buy something on the train station and take it to the train.

It's a suggestion in response to the previous quote - maybe read the thread?

spriots · 08/06/2024 06:48

I just feel bad about the egg thing because I take hard boiled eggs to the office all the time in my lunchbox as I honestly can't smell them at all

AfterDinnerIDrinkASoda · 08/06/2024 07:38

Eggs smell regardless of how they're cooked.
I can only assume the eaters get immune to the pong, like those who are adamant their pets don't whiff.

They wouldn't really smell contained to a lunchbox, even though I have been able to smell them through containers before. I do have a dog nose though. I doubt it's a problem if you have them at lunch unless you're peeling and eating them at your desk!

PuttingDownRoots · 08/06/2024 07:40

What's the consensus on Scotch eggs then?

They smell like sausage and egg.

Err... Yes that has definitely happened

I will take them somewhere else to eat now.

I think everyone has a different sense of smell. I honestly can't smell eggs at all. But I find the smell of tuna totally overpoweringly awful.

TheBloatedMiddle · 08/06/2024 07:58

Oh this thread was not what I expected. Hot food - hmm not good. But years ago i commuted to London from Portsmouth harbour daily. Once i saw a couple who did the same commute unpack an entire picnic of baguette, pate, fruit and red wine and followed their lead from that day on.

EverythingYouDoIsaBalloon · 07/06/2024 20:43

Okay so you got 100s of different passengers on public transport - so who gets to decide what is considered considerate or inconsiderate? As I said, if it bothers someone so much then the other alternative is to use your own transport. You can't dictate what others can or can't do on public transport.

Dictate, no. Hold an opinion, yes.

If people were more public-spirited instead of espousing the cult of the individual, there would be fewer conversations like this, though. Because, as this thread demonstrates, there are some foods that are more or less universally deemed as too antisocial to eat on a train, so if more people were considerate of others the world (or at least trains) would arguably be a nicer place for everyone.

It's not universally agreed though.

Some people have strong random distastes for the smells of random foods. Some people don't care at all. Some people have a mild dislike but shrug it off.

Some foods are more disliked than others perhaps, but I'd bet if you started a poll there'd be a big split on whether eating eg smoked salmon sandwiches, next to a random customer was fair enough or a massive breach of the social contract.

I can't imagine any of that was particularly smelly food though.

I love your username @likepebblesonabeach .

I became so overwhelmed on a long train journey recently, that I upgraded to get away from the smells and eating noises. I couldn’t really afford it, but it was that or get off the train.

mondaytosunday · 08/06/2024 08:21

It would only bother me as it would make me hungry.
I've been on a few long train journeys recently (five hours or so) and we've had sandwiches and crisps to eat. Actually not many people ate much, we did have a table which helped! I don't recall anyone having hot food.

Blarneytalk · 08/06/2024 08:30

Mnetcurious · 07/06/2024 15:15

I regularly commute by train, yanbu. Hot food should not be allowed, it’s inconsiderate. Mind you I have come across people eating cheese and onion crisps on the train at 8am and the smell from that was pretty grim too 🤢

Do they smell different at 8am to 8pm?

Just out of interest how do you cope in restaurants, cafes, eating with family and friends? Or in normal everyday situations?

Do people not eat in first class then?

lovelysunshine22 · 08/06/2024 08:38

How do people who can't cope with others eating on a train manage to cope when flying? The meals on a plane often smell and people often bring macdonalds or kfc type foods on board a plane!

Mnetcurious · 08/06/2024 08:39

Blarneytalk · 08/06/2024 08:30

Unpleasant at any time of day but yes first thing in the morning is worse!

I think in any context (not just on public transport) most people’s stomach would turn at the smell of something strongly savoury, for example curry, at breakfast time but they’d be ok with it later in the day.
