Eating on Trains

I travel on the train daily to work, 30 mins each way. I've just came back from a 3 hour train journey and was shocked that a family of 4 got on with fish and chips. The whole carriage was stinking of fish and chips and the majority of passengers were on the train the whole journey so had to put up with this for 3 hours.
AIBU that if you travel on public transport you should be aware of those around you?

It was the case, many years ago, that eating hot food on the London Underground was not allowed, because of the smell. I think this might have also applied on British Rail - outside of the dining carriages.
I agree 100%. Nothing is being done to maintain any sort of standards.
See also - feet on seats, luggage on seats……

I think eating on trains is acceptable as people can be on the train for quite a long time but you should be a bit aware of what food you take on in terms of smells

Noonecares245 · 07/06/2024 14:52

There is nothing wrong with it whatsoever. If it bothers you so much, consider driving in your own car.

snackprovidersupreme · 07/06/2024 14:52

On my train (long commute of over an hour) people regularly bring hot takeaway food. I sat next to someone eating sushi recently and another eating ham. Yesterday someone had a whole takeaway pizza. It's smelly and disgusting!!

Though not as bad as someone clipping their nails a few years ago....

Womanofcustard · 07/06/2024 14:53

Update! Hot food is not allowed on most buses and coaches.

Mindymomo · 07/06/2024 14:55

Whilst eating in trains is allowed, eating fish and chips isn’t something I would do.

Amsx · 07/06/2024 14:55

Some absolute wrong un ate 3 boiled eggs on a train I was on recently. Pulled them out of a bag he had in his pocket, peeled them and ate them.

Was disgusting. The bloke opposite called him a barbarian.

BobbyBiscuits · 07/06/2024 14:57

I think eating a hot meal on a train is a bit antisocial. But on a long journey I certainly would expect people to be eating snacks, sandwiches etc. on the tube I think anything above a chocolate or cereal bar is pretty unacceptable. Even crisps are noisy and messy. There's not enough air or space on the tube to be messing about with eating.
The worst is people eating egg and bacon breakfast sandwiches on early morning packed commuter trains. Just why?! It has made me leave the train to be sick before.

TwattyMcFuckFace · 07/06/2024 14:59

Blimey, you should try living here in London when the schools finish around 3pm.

There's more chicken and chips on the bus than actual passengers.

AgentProvocateur · 07/06/2024 15:10

I got on an emirates flight last week (ie, one you get a hot meal on) and a family sat down and they all had a Macdonald’s meal. So inconsiderate.

This. I regularly take long train journeys for work and eat all types of food. Sometimes a sandwich, sometimes a salad, sometimes a hot meal from the on-board restaurant (that is offered in a takeaway container as well as on real plates and cutlery, so clearly intended for people to eat it back at their seats).

I wouldn’t bring fried food on the train, fish or hard boiled eggs, but I also wouldn’t limit myself to a cold sandwich. Some of those are worse than actual hot food.

Octavia64 · 07/06/2024 15:14

I am travelling long distance by train tomorrow.

I am absolutely taking a packed lunch to eat on the train and will be buying multiple cups of tea and coffee. I expect most other passengers will do likewise.

(I don't like the smell of hot food on a train although I have been guilty of getting a maccies for the train after a late night out but to be honest on the last train home nobody cares about the smell of hot food it's the vomit that bothers them)

Mnetcurious · 07/06/2024 15:15

I regularly commute by train, yanbu. Hot food should not be allowed, it’s inconsiderate. Mind you I have come across people eating cheese and onion crisps on the train at 8am and the smell from that was pretty grim too 🤢

I've never seen a McDonalds airside at an airport, their meal must have been cold by the time they ate it?

Exactly this

Sahara123 · 07/06/2024 15:19

I was on a London bus once and a lady got on with a plate of food and a fork , which she ate standing up! I don’t remember if it was smelly or not, I was too busy admiring her chutzpah!
But generally no hot, smelly food , it’s horrible.

Why inconsiderate? Because it was probably better quality than the meal you’d get served on a flight? 🤣

TwattyMcFuckFace · 07/06/2024 15:21

To be perfectly honest, so many passengers smell worse than most foods, I couldn't get fussed about it.

There are some, Dubai International Airport has a McDonalds, you can go there when tranferring from one flight to another.

Emirates is food is pretty good.

On long distance trains you can often order hot food to your seat, or at least you could pre-Covid. Or you can buy it from the buffet counter on trains that still have them.

In the good old BR days (and early days of privatisation) of course they still had dining cars with 3 course meals and silver service. Wonderful cooking smells wafting through the carriage.

There is clearly a tradition of eating hot food on long distance trains. People want a decent feed if they're travelling for hours, and it can't be compared to wolfing down a KFC during a 15 minute journey on the bus or Tube.

You could order a hot meal to be eaten in your seat on the overnight Sydney/Melbourne train. Only good thing about it really.

Kuwait city does too (random).

I can't drive for medical reasons, haven't been able to for more than 11 years. So what do you, in your judgemental opinion, suggest I do now, walk the 180 miles?
