Looking up set lists whilst at a gig

I have been to 2 concerts lately with 2 different people and they have both done this.

What they do is their business but last night my friend was literally shoving the phone in my face to tell me what was being played next.

Do people do this now?! I like the surprise of hearing the opening chords and realising it's your favourite song or whatever!

I didn't say anything but just wondered if I am being grumpy?

I'm with you. Unless it was a Motorhead gig, in which case, it was so loud, everyone heard their own set list. Sadly, no longer (although my ears have never been the same).

Oh god that sounds really annoying, please tell me this isn't a thing now

yellowsmileyface · 07/06/2024 11:25

This would really annoy me!

YABU though to not say something. Seems like the problem could be easily resolved by saying "could you keep the setlist to yourself? I like to be surprised".

I've done this for the last couple of gigs I've been to - mainly as they were both bands I haven't listened to in a while and wanted to do my homework to check I knew all the songs they were going to play.

Plus, I could plan when I nipped out to the loo and to get another drink!

Didn't change any of my enjoyment (I still got the goosebumps at the opening chords of my favourite songs). And I didn't tell anyone the setlist (although I did share it with DH beforehand as he asked!)

DH did the same for the recent gig he want to and and spent about 3 weeks building himself up into a right state as apparently this band were playing a song they never play live and was one of his favourites, so he was checking every gig of the tour that they were still playing it!

i do it, usually to work out when the best time to go to the loo will be

whatsallthisthenhey · 07/06/2024 11:34

I did this at Take That last week. I don't know much of their new stuff so just wanted to see when the 90s bangers were coming up. I didn't shove it in anyone's face though.

Perhaps we're all so used to having unlimited information at the tips of our fingers that we've lost the ability to just go with the flow, but I couldn't get too worked up about it.

It sounds like your friend gets excited by the anticipation of knowing her favourite song is coming, which is fine. Each to their own.

I have looked up the set list pre gig if it’s a band I’ve not listened to much recently or a band I’m seeing because a friend/family member is a huge fan and want to make sure I know the songs they’ll play. Also means you can plan your least favourite song to go to the loo.
A play by play of the set list during the gig sounds really annoying though (again, unless planning a loo trip!).

I've done this before a gig. Sometimes to confirm if I want to buy tickets or not, but never during a gig. I would hate it if someone tried to wave it at me. Most of the time I don't like to be spoiled.
