To think I’m too old at 60 to carry on working in a mental health unit

Even though I can’t really afford to retire

Absolutely not unreasonable, it’s incredibly physically tricky work as well as emotionally draining. But there are so many other jobs out there for HCAs or nurses, especially given that you are likely to be experienced. Have you applied for other jobs?

I did ‘my time’ on the wards for a while after qualifying, haven’t looked back since moving to the community.

YANBU. Could you find a less demanding job?

Couldn't have said it better myself. Have you looked into other jobs that provide home care perhaps? Local community nurse?

Older adults inpatient has different challenges and is probably more suited to older people. I include myself in that!

Forensics, rehab, dementia services. All different but less fast paced than adults mental health and you may find easier.

Then you have community nursing but I’ve never fancied that! And management roles of course. I’m a ward manager, it’s brutal but a different kind of stress. No long days for starters!

I am hoping to give up but by 60, it is tough! I’ve worked with someone in their 70’s and one of my best nurses is older than some of our over 65 patients! Everyone is different!

Not unreasonable. My nan was a similar age to you when an inpatient pinned her. She didn't feel strong enough to feel safe in that situation any longer so was lucky to be able to take early retirement.

Is there an option for you to use your skills more community based such as new mothers or schools. I'd imagine those would be safer.

It's not an age thing, if you're happy there carry on. Otherwise look at community jobs maybe? Look on local NHS websites at their vacancies. Might be something completely different that takes your fancy. Probably a drop in salary due to not doing shifts but often compensated by a higher banding (and mileage)
