To ask you what jobs you do?

Being cheeky and posting for traffic 😬

DS starts primary school in sept and I'd love to drop him off and pick him up. To do that I need to give up my current FT job.

What jobs do you do to fit around the school day?

I work for the civil service and do school pick ups and drop offs.

I work all year round and use holiday clubs but we have staff that work term time too.

I’m an actuary, however where we live parents working school hours is essentially the norm, so there are very few jobs where this isn’t possible, wrap around care is also free and readily available for all children.

ThePassageOfTime · 06/06/2024 17:19

I work in tech full time from home, so pop out to do pick up or use wraparound.

Be wary of killing off your career for the sake of a school hours job. Get your partner to do his share.

Brainded · 06/06/2024 17:21

do you mean that you would like to drop them off and pick them up within school hours or do you mean that you would just like to drop them off and pick them up including picking them up from school care for example? I’m a microbiologist but I work for a company with flexi time. So on the days I have my children (50-50 custody with Dad) I can drop them and then I collect them from Afterschool, so that suits me.

Is after school a possibility or is it that you just need to work literally within school hours?

Marshmallowbrain · 06/06/2024 17:27

Currently my partner does all the drop offs and pick ups, they have wrap around care with a childminder.

We are relocating and it seems childcare is in high demand and not easy to find. I could still commute to my current job but I'm not really happy in it, travel costs will double and I'll have to leave before 7am and won't get back until gone 7pm. I wouldn't mind sucking it up a couple of days a week and am planning on asking to reduce office days to 2 a week but we'll see.

I'm 40 this year and have worked all my life, I just want a bit of a better work life balance I guess.

The childcare providers I can find with availability don't do school drop off's.

Just thinking of possible ideas I guess.

beckybarefoot · 06/06/2024 17:33

i work for the emergency services, i work shifts and part time... pay is good, hours are good.

WitchyWay · 06/06/2024 17:34

We both WFH. Both in charity sector. We share drop offs and pick ups.

Lemonademoney · 06/06/2024 17:45

I’ve done a few different roles. I currently work in education. I manage most drop offs and pick ups but do have to use an breakfast/after school club at least once a week. I took a big pay drop to take this role versus my previous career however I get school holidays off with the children which I absolutely cherish and could financially just about afford to take the hit so went for it and have no regrets.

Lucimaya · 06/06/2024 18:48

NHS. Submitted a request to work within the school day only so I can do the school drop offs and pick ups, and that's the hours I do now.

VanLife33 · 06/06/2024 19:00

I'm a teaching assistant at the same school as my children
