12 week scan today - need advice quickly!

As above, I have my 12w ultrasound today and I’ve left the letter at home which tells me how much water I need to drink and the latest I can go for a wee! Midwife hasn’t replied and the scanning department is engaged. There’s conflicting info online so I thought I’d head here for quick advice 😂

I think I remember something about 2 pints but my brain is all over the place today. Can anyone help please?!

A small bottle of water a hour beforehand would be enough.

DownWhichOfLate · 06/06/2024 14:28

I didn’t think this was a thing any more? I haven’t ever needed to drink before a scan and I definitely had a wee just before!

tealandteal · 06/06/2024 14:29

Mine didn’t have specific guidance about how much to drink it just said full bladder.

SusanSHelit · 06/06/2024 14:29

Around 2 pints should be fine, it's just to make sure your bladder is full. Don't go for a wee before you leave and you should be ok

CoralQueef · 06/06/2024 14:29

500ml at least an hour before

RosiePH · 06/06/2024 14:30

Yes, don’t drink 2 pints unless you’ve actually got a bladder the size of a swimming pool!

I drank 1 pint an hour before one of mine and the discomfort was awful. I was actually sent off to do ‘half a wee’ as my bladder was squashing the baby 😂

For me, the optimum amount is about half a pint an hour before.

yumyumyumy · 06/06/2024 14:31

A pint of water an hour or half an hour before is plenty.

Notsonifty50 · 06/06/2024 14:32

I've had lots of scans in early pregnancy and was never told I needed to drink beforehand!

This!

none of my scans 20 years ago needed a full bladder and it was never mentioned.

i would think it’s the scanning equipment, wouldn’t surprise me if some hospitals had 20+ year old scanners.

mind it wouldn’t surprise me if they’ve just never changed the appointment letter 😂

CaptainCabinets · 06/06/2024 14:35

I have a nurse bladder so it probably has 5x the capacity of the average bladder 😂

I drink water like it’s going out of fashion anyway so will just carry on with what I’ve got and then hold my wee for at least an hour before.

I’m just so excited! 😄

Pint. And don't have a wee

CaptainCabinets · 06/06/2024 14:36

Thanks all! Will probably be back later with a new thread for nub theory 😂

Half life of water in your stomach is 20 mins. Earlier you drink, the more of it will have passed through to fill your bladder. For every 20 mins before, the better. So I would personally not pee for at least an hour and a half before, and try to have drank at least a pint by that point too.

GettingFrustrated1 · 06/06/2024 14:52

Liquids go through me very quickly so I just had a 500ml bottle of water when we parked up at the hospital and it was fine.

Same! I was bursting by the time I had my scan and all they could see was a massive bladder. Aim for half full.

TokyoSushi · 06/06/2024 14:57

Oh I've had to do half a wee before too! Good luck OP!

FirstBabySnnorer · 06/06/2024 15:40

I needed a full bladder at my scan at 7 weeks. I was told at 12 weeks the baby is big enough to not matter anymore.

CaptainCabinets · 06/06/2024 17:56

All went well! My bladder was very full 😂
