DD(6) needs to have two baby first premolars out

My daughter who just turned six have developed dental abscess for her two lower first premolars. We took her to see her dentist and she said they needed to be taken out, and referred us to Paediatric dentist as an emergency appointment. The Paediatric dentist saw her and also confirmed to take those out. We hoped that baby tooth root canals can save them due to concerns about permanent teeth alignment (loss of space, overcrowding, etc).

Since then, we have consulted another Paediatric dentist who can do root canals in the same practice, she also agreed to take them out. But I’m not 100% sure if she reaches this statement to avoid any contradiction to her colleague. I had expressed a very strong favor of keeping them during our consultation.

AIBU to consult another Paediatric dentist for this matter?

I think it would be best to have them taken out.I know you are reluctant, but baby teeth will drop out soon anyway,The risk of infection is high. and in rare cases could lead to sepsis ! I am not trying to alarm you, but this needs seeing to ASAP! your poor little girl is in pain FFS!

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 07/06/2024 09:31

There’s no such thing as a paediatric endodontist because no one does Endodontics on deciduous teeth

PleaseletitbeSpring · 07/06/2024 09:31

A perfect example of a non professional person googling and thinking they now know better than someone fully trained and with years of experience.

If I'd had a parent arguing against the extraction of an abscessed deciduous molar and wanting their child to live with an infection in their mouth whilst seeking a root canal therapy, I'd have gladly sent them on their way for a second, third or more opinion. I'd have been so sorry for the child.

Sleepingonamansionroof · 07/06/2024 09:33

Given the amount of decay that’s there I would have thought root canal treatment was the least of your worries.

@Menora yes pulpectomy. I understand for one tooth it cannot be done because of not enough tooth structure. But for the other one the rationale given is not very convincing. It is mentioned that since the other needs to be out so we will take this out for ‘balancing’ concern. But after reading some research papers, it seems that the first primary molars do not necessarily cause balancing issue. If I can save one of her teeth, why not?

Because it will fall out soon. Humans are not like robots you don't know when her adult teeth will come through, I certainly had all my adult teeth before high school.

Also you don't want there to be decay in her adult teeth.

We are born with adult teeth they just have not descended.

Please don't put her through a root canal.

Ciderlout · 07/06/2024 09:39

Root canal on a 6 year old is bonkers.

This!
Now she may have a condition that causes very weak enamel on her teeth (nobody’s fault) OR her parents have been neglectful and not helped her take vare of them in infancy.

AndiOliversGlasses · 07/06/2024 09:46

Bonkers. It all sounds to me like a parent who is racked with guilt over allowing the decay to happen and is now panicking about the outcome being tooth extraction, so wants to do all she can to save the tooth and assuage her guilt. Me me me. Ain’t gonna happen.

JuiceBoxJuggler · 07/06/2024 09:49

You've been told numerous times, by numerous people. Yet, refuse to follow the advice.

I can't... OP you are ridiculous.

Mrsdht · 07/06/2024 09:53

YOURE NOT LISTENING
You keep asking whether people are professionals. Are you? Sounds like you've fallen into a massive Google rabbit hole and professionals have given their advice and youre still ignoring it. For me, to let your 6yo child go on like this while you worry about a baby tooth is bonkers.
My daughter had 11 teeth out at the same age at the dental hospital. This was due to medication for a long term condition, fruit juice, enamel problems and genetics. I was ill with the thought and blamed myself but was reassured by the dentist that the chain of events had been horrible that led us there. Let me tell you she ate fine. She eas immediately out of pain. And her teeth are perfect. Not even a brace needed. She's now 20. Stop being an idiot and think of your daughter rather than how you feel cosmetically about her

@FiveTreeHill thank you! You said it’s nonexistent and may I know it’s a professional opinion pls?

Yes I'm a dentist. I work in hospital and we admit so many children with dental abscesses, who need emergency surgery and hospital admission. Children can become unwell quickly.

A root canal in a child isn't quite the same as in an adult, but similar principles apply. The other concern is traumatising the child preventing them from being able able access dental care in the future

RobinHumphries · 07/06/2024 10:35

@sashh that is only partially correct

Leah5678 · 07/06/2024 10:43

Do you live near a hospital? Because tooth infection does lead to sepsis which can kill in just a few hours. Even if you get to hospital in time it might be busy and you have to wait hours.
Get that tooth out asap I can't believe you've left it in so long maybe you didn't know about sepsis but I'm shocked not one of those dentists warned you about this.

AlwaysBlowingLightbulbs · 07/06/2024 10:48

No way would I put a dc through a root canal. Especially on a baby tooth

If she ends up with over crowding then she had a brace. Simple.

My eldest lost their teeth naturally and still needed a brace as did I.

RobinHumphries · 07/06/2024 10:51

This is raising so many red flags - a safe guarding referral should be made

Destiny123 · 07/06/2024 10:55

(Dr) - u need them out like you've been advised before you end up with a safeguarding referral for neglect (many parents get referred for multiple rotten teeth alone, let alone waiting so long to get her treated

PurpleChrayn · 07/06/2024 11:02

This just screams Munchausen's by proxy.

MUMSNET HQ: Is there any way you could have a look behind the scenes here and, if this is not a troll, for the love of this poor child, get the social services involved?

Anusername · 07/06/2024 11:11

@Destiny123 I’ve already booked her in to get it out if you have read my earlier posts. I need to make sure that’s the best route for my daughter.

@Leah5678 thanks and thats very good point based on my recent experience with A&E. I’ve booked her in for the earliest available appointment though.

@AlwaysBlowingLightbulbs thank you for sharing your experience. It’s devastating to see her lose teeth so young.

I am pretty sure I reported this thread yesterday. I hope it is a troll as I really feel for the child.

Tdcp · 07/06/2024 11:31

This has to be a troll thread, no parent could leave a child with an abscess for a month due to debating whether to have 2 baby teeth pulled? Have you ever HAD an abscess OP? if this is really a serious thread you need to take a good hard look at yourself and get that child the care she needs from any of the 3 professionals that have told you she needs the teeth out! That poor kid.

Anusername · 07/06/2024 11:48

@PleaseletitbeSpring ouch but very good point.

OP posts:
PatsyStonesBeehive · 07/06/2024 13:32

This cannot be real. If it was my kid, those teeth would have been gone already. Do you know how dangerous an abscess/dental infection can be? I know a 35 year old who died of a cardiac issue due to a tooth infection he left too long. I hope to God you've listened to the posters before me and got her back at the dentist today.
