Am I being unreasonable to let my 12-year-old watch Hazbin Hotel?

Hi everyone,

I need some perspective on this. My 12-year-old has recently become very interested in a show called Hazbin Hotel. I did a bit of research and found out that it's an animated series with mature themes, strong language, and adult humor.

From what I've seen, it doesn't seem very appropriate for kids, but my child insists that all their friends are watching it and that it's "not that bad."

Honestly, I'm not too bothered by it. I know it's not the most wholesome content, but I think my child is mature enough to handle it. Plus, I'd rather they watch it at home where I can keep an eye on things and discuss any questions or concerns that come up.

Am I being unreasonable to let my 12-year-old watch Hazbin Hotel?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Ah this is one of those threads....
OP - 'AIBU?'
Majority of posters - 'Yes!'
OP - 'No I'm not, here's why...'

Why bother posting if you actually aren't willing to take on board the opinions YOU asked for?!

JoleneTookHerMan · 05/06/2024 11:06

Mature or not, they are still a child watching themes that are not appropriate.

My DD is mature, but it doesn't mean it's ok for her to watch something that's rated 18+ on Amazon Prime.

Feelingmentallyunsettled · 05/06/2024 11:06

I'm another one who doesn't understand why the op asked the question.
This is another depressing thread hot on the heels of the one about the 8 year old found watching pornography on an iPad. Albeit that was without the parents consent.
Childhood doesn't exist any more for a lot of children.

I tend to go by Common sense media and take a year off. It says 17+

I have overruled it occasionally, eg Romeo and Juliet when the issue was glorification of guns, don’t think my 13 yr old girl in the U.K. is going to get hold of a gun. But unless there are obvious reason like that then I don’t think straying too far from the age recc is great.

Hazbin Hotel TV Review

Rampant sex, profanity, violence in animation set in hell. Read Common Sense Media's Hazbin Hotel review, age rating, and parents guide.

My family never objected to me watching, reading, or listening to content (within reason - they wouldn’t go rent me a porn film) I certainly had an awareness of mature themes. I’ve seen a few episodes (it’s not for me, but whatever) Hazbin Hotel is a mildly ‘adult’ program I guess, but nothing you couldn’t expect on mainstream tv, and nothing a 12 year old hasn’t been exposed to at school.

Were you all pearl-clutchers protected from South Park as kids?

Verite1 · 05/06/2024 11:25

I have never heard of the show so can't directly comment (though the synopsis of episode 4 means it would be a no from me). I think age ratings can be misleading and common sense media is always overly conservative (I knock a couple of years off those). There are some 18s (particularly older ones) which I would let my 14 year old watch. Conversely, there are some 15s that I wouldn't. We started watching Shogun together as I knew his friends had (and children of my friends). We both decided in episode 1 that it was too much. I also didn't let him watch squid games even though lots of his friends did. I thought the psychological torture aspect of it was too much. My two red lines are sexual violence and torture scenes.

Why pearl clutchers?
Because some people have different views on parenting?

ZombieBoob · 05/06/2024 12:09

The Poison song is in the episode. Not fan made. While he's singing the song on the screens in the background show the sex scenes.

ZombieBoob · 05/06/2024 12:14

This one. Just in case we are getting our wires crossed. Valentino is forcing him to do porn that's why he only owns his soul in the studio

That's vile - there's cocaine snorting, bondage, S&M, sex and blow job moments in that video and often with an implied lack of consent.

I honestly can't believe my sister allows her 14 year old to watch it, let alone cosplay as Angeldust and out videos on tik Tok

Bullsey · 05/06/2024 12:41

If you're happy with your 12yo watching that poison video then you're a shit parent.

Doesn't make me a pearl clutcher to think there's no need for a child to watch that.

scatterolight · 05/06/2024 12:54

Having just seen that clip, dear god we're in trouble if parents think it's OK for kids to be consuming this stuff. It's almost impossible to believe there are parents voluntarily showing this brain rotting pornography to their kids and then proudly saying "oh my kid's mature for their age". Those poor, poor children.

LakeTiticaca · 05/06/2024 13:10

I was allowed to watch On the Buses when I was 9, but I wasn't allowed to watch Monty Python.
Strange parents, mine 😅

Verite1 · 05/06/2024 13:11

I have just watched the video. How anyone could knowingly let their 12 year old watch a program based around that is beyond me. And I don't think I am even particularly strict when it comes to age ratings etc.

CaravaggiosCat · 05/06/2024 13:20

Completely inappropriate for your daughter. Really don't know how you can justify it but you know what they say, don't be so open minded that your brain falls out.

I’m would say it fully depends on the kid. I watched both hazbin and helluva boss at 11 and Im fine. But some kids start watching it at like 13 and it messes them up so it really depends. Id say no, but if your kid starts acting different negatively because of the show to stop letting them watch it

CoraPirbright · 20/12/2024 17:10

My 16 year old watches this and I am not too thrilled. Absolutely no way would I be allowing a 12 year old to watch it but every time you reply to someone objecting, you defend your decision, so I am not sure really what the point if this thread is. OP: “Am I unreasonable?” Other posters “yes!” OP “well no because of x,y,z”

I would rather she understands it than send nudes to a boy or the likes.

these are the options?! FML

Lovelysummerdays · 20/12/2024 17:19

My 14 yo watched it. I watched it with him, it’s pretty dark but funny and I love a catchy showtime. I wouldn’t let my 12 yo watch it though as a different character/ not mature enough. I think 12 yo vary wildly.

RosLFraser · 10/02/2025 11:18

you are NOT being unreasonable, it basically tells the audience to be trans, and has some very, erm, weird characters.
