Look at my bad painting skills

Am so disappointed. It's taken me days to paint the trim /skirting in my hall. I put masking tape at the bottom where the wood meets the floor but look. I can only see the blotches ! It's taken me days- old rented house so did a lot of sanding and prep work and an undercoat. Any one any advice if I can fix it somehow.

Looks like a nice even coat all over - nice job! You can neaten up the edges with a sharp blade (e.g. Stanley knife). Score down along the edge then gently scrape off the splashes. Masking tape rarely comes off clean unfortunately! Don't beat yourself up! It will look great.

Is this a house you are renting or a house you rent out?

StandardSize14 · 05/06/2024 00:02

A razor blade was my suggest but a Stanley knife is probably safer 😂

Ah thanks. The trouble is the splashes are kinda in between the wall and the brown trim. I'll have a go with a razor blade though . I hope I can tidy it up! Yes it's a house I am renting. Asked for painting to be done for last few years but landlord wouldn't pay for it so I'm doing it myself . I was fed up looking at it tbh and you couldn't clean it it was so scuffed and marked

Use masking tape for a clean edge. Blotches on the floor will come up with gentle rubbing from a scourer - but be gentle

That's the thing @InSpainTheRain I spent ages taping it . It's not the floor I'm so worried about it's the blotches on the brown trim but trouble is the paint has dripped down between wall and trim . Am not sure how I will get razor or Stanley to scrape them off as it's awkward

I’d probably sand the edges then go over it again.

Did you remove the masking tape when the paint was still damp? I find if the paint had dried too much, the masking tape can pull it back off. I tend to use a piece of hard cardboard or something as an edging /paint shield rather than masking tape. (You can buy a paint shield for a few quid but stiff cardboard has worked for me).

Ok it's the blotches between the wall and the brown trim that are bothering me. And yeh I know the trick of removing the tape before paint dries. Have had that happen too where the tape peels off the dry paint with it !!!

You just need to put some decorators culk into the tiny gap between the skirting and wall. It gives it a nice finish.

Sorry I see that now. As a PP said, probably best to just go the whole hog and fill the crakes in. It’s a learning experience- I’ve only recently got into doing a bit of DIY and I’m getting a bit better already!

This is the solution!
