To expect coil to have stopped my periods?

Posting here for traffic.
Had coil fitted in dec. I'm 49. Had had heavy peri periods previously, but they'd eased off before coil fitted. Also on hrt gel. First few months after fitting had light dark brown spotting & bleeding- daily. Then had a week or so it stopped. Since then I've gone back to pretty much daily bleeding, back to bright red. Not heavy, but enough for tampons most days. Maybe the odd day I get nothing. I thought the coil stopped periods!! I'm over 6 months in now - anyone had similar experience? Can some women just bleed continually on it? Will it ever stop?! Docs have brushed it off- I had it fitted at same time as hysteroscopy & scans etc so nothing sinister going on. Not sure how long to persevere with it. Otherwise it suits me, feel much better emotionally etc. though have def put weight on..

It took me 7 months to stop, I was on the list to have it removed at the time as I’d had enough.

footgoldcycle · 05/06/2024 07:13

I'm twelve months. I'm still getting periods that last two weeks. Not heavy but still annoying. Was hoping they would stop

NowyouhaveDunnett · 05/06/2024 07:21

I had one a few years ago and mine never stopped unfortunately

DustyLee123 · 05/06/2024 07:24

I suddenly had a bleed, after months of no bleeding, and a scan found that the coil had slipped down so wasn’t working. Perhaps you need to push for a scan to check on the position. Can you still feel the threads?

Star81 · 05/06/2024 07:25

Was it def a hormonal coil you had put in and not a copper one ? The copper one doesn’t stop periods.

Puddypuds · 05/06/2024 07:31

I've had mine about three years and it took at good six months for my periods to stop. I have just had two periods three weeks apart out of the blue. I spoke to our practice nurse who advised a smear (which came back clear) and am now booked in for a scan to see if it has moved.

Cas112 · 05/06/2024 07:32

Are you sure it wasn't the copper coil? That one doesn't stop periods

POTC · 05/06/2024 07:34

Didn't stop mine, I had it removed as random bleeding was more annoying than regular periods!

VickyEadieofThigh · 05/06/2024 07:34

I had the Mirena specifically for heavy, prolonged and painful periods. Whilst it greatly reduced these awful symptoms, I still had periods regularly.

Soboredofdiettalk · 05/06/2024 07:35

I had this. I can't remember how long I had it in for, but I had to have it removed as I hated it. Mine was a mirena one.

My friend had no periods on hers though. Think you can be lucky / unlucky

Workawayxx · 05/06/2024 07:36

I had spotting for over a year with the mirena coil. I think it’s just luck of the draw and I’m quite bleedy on hormones, I was the same with the mini pill. Give it time though, now you’ve dond6 months hopefully it’ll stop soon.

eta after around a year my spotting stopped and I had a blissful year or so with no periods (till I had to have it taken out for treatment for abnormal smear).

DrJump · 05/06/2024 07:38

Copper coil made my periods and long. mirena coil made mine disappear.

Speckledy · 05/06/2024 07:45

Is it Mirena? I had one years ago and was gutted when my periods continued for the whole time.

I was talked into trying it again at 49 to deal with heavy and unpredictable perimenopausal bleeding. It has slowed down the bleeding but since it was fitted 7 months ago I have still bled almost continuously, enough to need pads etc. The gynaecologist I spoke to last month didn't seem particularly surprised and basically suggested "wait and see" for a bit longer.

WhereAreWeNow · 05/06/2024 07:47

I think I'd go back to the doctor and check it's properly in place. Mine stopped my periods completely. Might also be worth checking your estrogen dose is right as I think that can affect bleeding.

Redflagman · 05/06/2024 07:49

I have very heavy periods and the mirena didn't stop me having them, I still had periods but they were a lot lighter in comparison/more manageable. I've recently had the coil removed and it's carnage

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 05/06/2024 07:52

It's a one-size-fits all dose isn't it?

In the past when I've needed to take progestin to stop bleeding, I've used tablets and needed 50% more than the 'normal' amount for it to have any effect.

FirstBabySnnorer · 05/06/2024 13:25

Took me about 9 months to settle. And I still had periods, just much lighter ones.

driedapricots101 · 05/06/2024 20:14

Reassuring! It's a mirena. It's not that heavy.. just annoying & I have anemia so could do with not keep bleeding! Thanks for sharing all your experiences.
