1 or 2 cars for holiday

Youtoldmeonce · 04/06/2024 14:35

A & B are going on a self catering holiday next week with dogs.
A wants to take both cars due to amount of stuff needed to take (dogs beds, bedding for selves, food so no need to go shopping for a few days) etc.
Holiday destination is only 100 away so extra fuel to take 2 cars is not really a factor.
Bs reply to this is “how does your mind work, we only need to take one car”.
This will probably mean that A can’t take everything they would like to take. Is A BU to want to take 2 cars?

Depends how many dogs and how big they are surely?

two Yorkshire terriers one car probably fine, 5 Labrador’s less so!

StripeyDeckchair · 04/06/2024 14:40

Well I wouldn't, its a bit of an odd thing to do and not very £ or environmentally friendly.
but if it makes life easier to take both and park one up for the week & use the other for day trips then I wouldn't make a big fuss about it

Pogointospring · 04/06/2024 14:40

Depends.

If the cars involved are the size of a Ford Fiesta and you have three Great Danes then it’s obviously reasonable to take two cars.

If you’ve got a huge SUV, a couple of Yorkies and A wants to take every pair of shoes they own, the air fryer and enough spare food for the apocalypse then two cars is ridiculous and A should pack more sparingly.

Smart car or estate car?

bridgetreilly · 04/06/2024 14:41

I would expect two people, two reasonably sized dogs, and all their things to fit into my car and I drive a Corsa. Dog beds squash up pretty small! But all the food for a week can take a fair amount of room. Can you get a supermarket delivery there when you arrive?

Rubbishconfession · 04/06/2024 14:42

This will probably mean that A can’t take everything they would like to take.

Does it mean B will take more of their stuff?

If you do take one car then it needs to be fair to A too.

What are the things A can't take?

Cadela · 04/06/2024 14:43

How much stuff are you planning on taking? I assume you’re not camping. Presumably you can get everything in the boot and dogs go on backseat in seatbelt harness? Unless you have a smart car and wolfhounds.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 04/06/2024 14:45

It wouldn't be a problem in my car, assuming the dogs aren't several Leonbergers, which might be an uncomfortable squeeze on the back seat.

We need more details about dogs and vehicles, and what kind of equipment you're taking.

Hinkuy · 04/06/2024 14:46

You're clearly taking too much stuff. Do dogs need loads of things? Are you perhaps being a bit OTT?? I'd just take 1 car.

Youtoldmeonce · 04/06/2024 14:48

Thanks for your replies, 1 large dog & 1 smaller, family sized car.
I do tend to overpack so from the replies I will have to learn to be more sensible about what I take.

1 car. If there is space issue I’d scrap the food and book a delivery to the place you’re staying. It also avoids fresh stuff like milk being out of the fridge for too long.

Orangello · 04/06/2024 14:53

1 car, share the driving. Can't dogs manage without their beds for the duration of the trip?

TheTripThatWasnt · 04/06/2024 14:56

Madness to take 2 cars! My friend (and DH) takes 2 medium size dogs, with their crates and beds and plenty of stuff for a self catering holiday in a golf. Dogs on the back seat, 'stuff' in the boot. Unless you're camping (or taking paddleboards/canoes/bikes/other bulky leisure gear) then I can't see how you couldn't fit everything in a normal size car.

TheTripThatWasnt · 04/06/2024 14:57

Vacuum bags are a saviour for bedding (if by bedding you mean duvets and pillows, not just the covers for them). You can buy them with their own hand pump to take the air out without a hoover. We pack all our rugs, bedding etc down that way for camping and it makes a huge difference.

Caspianberg · 04/06/2024 15:13

Do you really need to take own bedding? I have never been self catering that doesn’t provide bedding and towels?
