Next door cat keeps shitting on my drive

Just that really. We moved into a new home 2 years ago and have a relationship with our neighbours where we can say hi and bye to eachother.
However, the cat from next door is always shitting on our drive and garden. We are constantly picking it up from our property. We don't know what to do. My father in law has accidently stepped into it. My children play in the garden and obviously our cars sometimes go over it when driving on and off the drive. It's disgusting.
I know we can't control what the cat does and nor can the owners but what do we do?
Do I have a friendly chat with the neighbour about how regular it is and how the children have to be careful where they play?
AIBU?

Unfortunately cats have the right to roam which means they shit where they shit. Sadly.

You can speak to your neighbour but I’m not sure how it will help unless your expecting them to come poo pick?

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 04/06/2024 12:39

Your neighbour could control it by cat proofing her garden with a catio or other means of keeping it on her own property, I believe this should be the norm for any cat owners really

Wotcher · 04/06/2024 12:41

I’d be popping it back over the wall til they get the message.

cavernclub · 04/06/2024 12:43

Are you sure it's their cat?
Could it be a dog or a fox?
Cats normally like gravel/ earth so they can bury it after

Beamur · 04/06/2024 12:45

Are you sure it's the cat? It's unusual for a cat not to bury poo but can happen if they're having a territorial dispute. Your drive being the boundary under dispute...

nutbrownhare15 · 04/06/2024 12:45

I would put up a camera to be sure. If it is the cat ask what they suggest. You could look into some kind of movement activated sprinkler system.

We were a little dubious too at first but we kept watching and the cat always likes to hang in our garden and drive. We thought it was unusual that it wasn't buried. It's like the cat knows what it's doing. We spoke with the previous owners and apparently they had the same issue with the cat.

If my neighbours told me there was an issue, I would ask if they minded me checking each morning and removing it from their drive. Id rather my cats didnt do this, and generally cats bury their poo. They do sometimes leave it uncovered if they are unsettled

Sago1 · 04/06/2024 12:58

We had the same problem Menthol Salts, about £4 a tub stopped it.
Most pharmacies sell them.

shockeditellyou · 04/06/2024 13:00

put a solution of Jeyes fluid on your drive. It’s harmless once dried and cats don’t like the smell. Only thing that works for us.

TomeTome · 04/06/2024 13:11

Sprinklers?
orange oil?
lion dung?

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 04/06/2024 13:14

Get a super soaker and stake it out over a weekend.

And if they walk over it before it's dried it will kill them Hmm solves the problem though?

SeeingRainbowsInTheGloom · 04/06/2024 13:46

One of the ultrasonic cat deterrents worked for me, although I know they don't always. I think you just have to get the cat out of the habit and then it will find somewhere else.

S00tyandSweep · 04/06/2024 14:26

I had this problem and I got my neighbours to come round and clean up after their pet every time.

They also purchased one of those sonic cat repellent things and some pellets to put down.

That combination worked. Essentially it just meant their cat poo-ed on someone else's lawn but it was no longer my problem to resolve.

They were decent neighbours though, plus I now have a dog which I never allow to shit in their front garden, (& if in some freak circumstance they did, I'd pick it up) so I think that's fair 🤷‍♀️

Hope you don’t drive anywhere. Cars kill cats a damn sight more often than Jeyes fluid.

LunchBoxPolice · 04/06/2024 15:47

Jeyes fluid around the perimeter of my garden worked. A neighbours cat kept shitting on the lawn (and yes it was definitely the cat, yes I’ve seen it and no it doesn’t bury it).

cooliebrown · 04/06/2024 16:04

we bought an Amazon Basics solar-powered cat-scarer thing for £20, that now means our back lawn and vegetable beds are clear of toxic cat mess. We can now even let our grandchildren play in our garden.

I've come to the view that people who fail to train their cats to mess in a litter tray indoors are as anti-social as dog owners who refuse to pick up after their dogs. Your creature, your responsibility.

Ficklebricks · 04/06/2024 16:08

I would just try to deter the cat and say nothing to the owners. The owners can't very well lock it up all day.

I once read an advice thread here about how to keep cats away and someone swore by male human urine. As a desperate last resort I sent my husband out with a bottle of pee to pour on the cats usual spots and it bloody works!

The only other marginally effective thing was tea tree oil on teabags but they get used to those eventually. Now every night he goes out with his bottle and marks his territory, puts them right off.

Ispywithmylittlepie · 04/06/2024 16:14

A current problem for us as well. DS stepped in it with his new shoes on. It's gone right into all the creases in the sole 🤢
I cut a load of lemon up today to scatter and I'm scouring the internet for deterrents to buy. I was going to spray vinegar solution everywhere but DH said I would look mental and good luck with that. I sympathise. I know which cat it is, seems to think our garden is his. Not a clue who owner is. I can see why my dad hated cats so much.

Jennyathemall · 04/06/2024 16:22

Tell the neighbours. Tell them you are 100% sure it is their cat as you have seen it on multiple occasions and tell them you expect them to pick it up. It’s their cat, their responsibility, just like a dog. And no there isn’t any difference.

WetBandits · 04/06/2024 16:25

Please don’t pour Jeyes on your drive, that shit is toxic to anything that might wander across it before it dries!

Cats don’t like citrus, peppermint or lavender. Nice lavender bush in your garden should solve it!

It literally dries in minutes on a dry day. And yes, I’ve seen cats shit directly beside lavender plants.

I know cat owners often insist that cats always bury their turds, but I've lived in three different properties now where I've actually witnessed neighbours' cats crapping on my patio and/or lawn, so plenty of cats are happy to shit wherever they fancy it.
