To call in sick on second week of new job?

I feel dreadful, I was unwell over the weekend and went to work yesterday and only had cold like symptoms but felt really sick but got through the day.

I came home last night and went to bed as I was so unwell and I've woken up now at my alarm and I feel hot, I have a migraine and my throat is killing me I feel 10x worst than yesterday but appreciate how bad it is to call in sick but not sure I have another option as I'm in no position to work.

Gah what should I do Sad

If you’re too ill to work then you are too ill to work. People get sick and the world doesn’t end, they will see you aren’t a chancer over the coming months. I hope you feel better soon OP

Amsx · 04/06/2024 07:49

I would try and go in.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 04/06/2024 07:51

It can’t be helped - if you’re ill, you’re ill.

As a pp has said, you will get the chance to show your worth over the next few months.

LongSinceGotUpAndGone · 04/06/2024 07:52

I wouldn't go in - aside from you being too ill to work, it won't endear you to your colleagues if you turn up obviously unwell, potentially spreading your illness to them.

Shortfatsuit · 04/06/2024 07:53

Just call in sick. Acknowledge when you call that it's not a good look calling in sick in your second week and explain that you really are just too sick to work.

This. My workplace are very clear about not wanting people in if they’re infectious, and I’d have thought double that if you’re customer facing.

Is it a job where you can try to WFH today?

Rosebel · 04/06/2024 07:56

No chance of working from home? If not then don't go in. It can't be helped and as long as it's a one off it shouldn't matter.
I got sent home from work in my third week as I was so ill and my manager said she didn't want sick people in work

Doveyy · 05/06/2024 08:40

Thank you everyone.

I took yesterday off as I was just too poorly to work, I've been in bed since Monday evening and today I'm still really poorly so called in sick again.

I work just on the phones so having a sore throat and not being able to speak isn't gonna work really. I'd just be sat around doing nothing.

I think I have to prioritise my health (plus I don't want to make anyone else sick in the office). If they terminate my employment because I'm genuinely poorly then it's not somewhere I want to work really.

But thank you for the advice hopefully they keep me on and see in the coming months that I am a reliable employee and this was just bad timing.

''@Amsx
I would try and go in.''

Nonsense.

If the OP is too ill to work, then she is too ill to work.

I hate it when people come in sick and risk passing on what they have to the rest of their team.

Not to mention that as a manager I don't want someone working who is not well and might make mistakes because of it.

I got severe tonsillitis in my second week of a new job. Still there 6 years on!
They extended my probation slightly
When I rang in to say I couldn't come in, they couldn't even understand who I was my voice was so bad

Lincslady53 · 05/06/2024 10:21

We took on a 16 year old. He took his 2nd week with us off sick. He worked for us for well over 20 years and was a very valuable member of staff. Mind you, he did get a bit of piss taking in future years. We were a small business though, only DH, me and 2 others, so it was a bit like a family in many ways. He helped us out when we needed it, and he took time out when he needed to.

alfagirl73 · 05/06/2024 10:48

If you're sick you're sick. I have the option to WFH so tend to push through these days unless I'm literally so sick I can't function, but in your situation, there is no point struggling in to a) croak on the phone and b) pass it on so everyone else on the phones ends up the same way.

Yes there are people who take the piss, but if you call in, are honest and acknowledge that being sick on your second week is certainly NOT your choice, then it won't be an issue. Your track record going forward will soon eliminate any concerns (if there even are any), and in my experience, it soon becomes obvious who is genuine with these things and who is a piss-taker.

Get well soon!

Sorry to keep posting on this thread but I'm still unwell.

I've sent a email informing them I'll be off for the rest of the week, acknowledged the bad timing of it and asked if I can take this sick days as holiday if it's better for the company so hopefully they see I'm being as reasonable as I can and I'm not taking the piss.

I genuinely don't know what's wrong with me, I have cold like symptoms, sore throat etc but I also have the worst migraine and now a raging UTI. I'm falling to bits.

I would try and go in.

It’s selfish to go into work if you are unwell. Can’t believe this mindset still exists after a pandemic 🙄

Merryoldgoat · 06/06/2024 08:08

As a manager I’d be entirely unconcerned in terms of sickness. Being ill isn’t a character flaw.

As you say you don’t want to work somewhere you can’t be ill without being stressed too. I wouldn’t either.

Bigredpants · 06/06/2024 08:11

Just make the right noises when you tell them you’re sick. One of my team went sick on his 2nd day. He was profusely apologetic, said his sick rate was generally very low and he was mortified. Of course I said not to worry etc.
Two years on and no issues at all.

Considering this thread was from June last year I imagine OP has dealt with the problem now
