To take these trousers back to H&M and try and get an exchange?

I bought a few bits from H&M online, including some linen trousers for my holiday.

I went to a BBQ yesterday and wore the trousers, put them in the wash last night ready to pack in my suitcase on Wednesday, got them out to hang them to dry and the whole hem on the left leg has come down.

I washed them on a 30 and normal spin so I don't know what's happened. They 100% were not like it when I put them in the wash.

H&M say online that they cannot accept returns that have been washed? I'm popping into town tomorrow and not sure whether to try my luck? Has anyone had any experience with H&M returns?

just tack the hem back up

BitOutOfPractice · 03/06/2024 20:18

I say this as the world’s worst seamstress, just sew the hem back up.

Growlybear83 · 03/06/2024 20:20

I would sew the hem back myself but I've found H&M are good with returns and you could argue that the trousers must have a fault for the hem to come down after one wear. But they have far more styles available online so you may not be able to get a replacement in the store.

Bremusa · 03/06/2024 20:20

Yes you can take them back, as a faulty item. If the whole hem has come down after one wash then they are not fit for purpose.

hoarahloux · 03/06/2024 20:21

What do the washing instructions say?

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 03/06/2024 20:22

For a hem?! No I wouldn't bother.

What do the washing instructions say?

This is key

NewMumSendHelp · 03/06/2024 20:27

This was years back, but I once bought a jumper in a H&M in the US, wore it, washed it and returned it (it was faulty) to a UK store without any hassle. It shouldn’t fall apart after one wash, I’d return.

What do the washing instructions say?

You cannot possibly imagine washing instructions labling 30° as a reason for a stich to come off.
Dry clean items would not fall appart, they would just shrink and wrinkle beyond repair

LeahMoo · 03/06/2024 20:39

Not for a hem I wouldnt, I'd just fix it. But if you took them back they should replace them given that they are only new.

elm26 · 03/06/2024 20:41

Instructions are wash at 30, no tumble drying.

I wouldn't even know how to take a hem up 🤦🏻‍♀️ I'm awful with anything like that.

I might just try and exchange them in store tomorrow.

Thanks!

Sewing up a hem is not difficult.

WestAtlantic · 03/06/2024 20:48

Wonderweb is what you need! No sewing required.

GoBackToPartyCity · 03/06/2024 20:48

I’d get some wonderweb if they refuse the exchange. No sewing needed!

PrincessTeaSet · 03/06/2024 20:49

They are faulty so they must replace them or refund - it's the law. No washing is fair enough if you just didn't like them. You should be able to expect an item of clothing to withstand several washes (according to label).so they aren't fit for purpose

BitOutOfPractice · 03/06/2024 20:50

Yes, wonderweb is your friend if you really can’t sew

AliceInWonderlost · 03/06/2024 20:51

Take them back and they will exchange or refund you as they're clearly not fit for purpose

You shouldn't have to just 'wonderweb' them when you have only worn them once and washed them in accordance with instructions

noctilucentcloud · 03/06/2024 21:05

It shouldn't have come down already, but as someone who really can't sew, hems on a trouser are really easy. There'll definitely be some instructions if you google but basically you just stitch the hem up in big zig zags stitches on the inside. Unless you live/work near the shop it'll be quicker to do the hem. Enjoy your holiday

scoobysnaxx · 03/06/2024 21:06

They're faulty so definitely take them back. I'd be pissed if this happened after 1 wash and not fannying around wasting my time sewing.

They're not fit for propose.

ThePoshUns · 03/06/2024 21:08

I'd be taking them back if that happened after one wash, I certainly wouldn't be fannying about sewing them.

elm26 · 04/06/2024 17:59

Thanks everyone, it was no issue at all. The assistant did an exchange for me straight away 😊

What is the world coming to? Everyone should know how to do a hem- it's common sense. Would take 5 minutes even by hand.
