To think level crossing cameras should cover the whole area around

Some kids nearly got hit locally to me yes I know they shouldn’t have been there however I would have thought the cctv covered the whole are. However I’ve discovered that it only covers the person checking if the crossing is clear to allow the train to pass. AIBU to find this dangerous as people could walk out from further along.

So you're completely ignoring all the valid reasons that people have given to explain why it's not possible? And also ignoring any personal responsibility that people should take for deliberately trespassing in a dangerous area?

I guess maybe I’m illogical but I lost someone due to this so I feel more strongly about it

It says this particular one has a signaller that presses if it’s clear

Where have you read that?

A website

Is this an official website, i.e. owned by Network Rail or a reputable news outlet?

We had someone killed here on the train running away from the police .

people get killed on train tracks , I lady also got killed hit by a bus a month ago., moving vehicles are dangerous.

KrisAkabusi · 06/06/2024 20:20

I'm sorry you lost someone. But I do feel that people are responsible for their own actions. Companies can try to make their property/activities safer, but ultimately cannot be responsible for people acting irresponsibly.

WiddlinDiddlin · 06/06/2024 20:22

I mean we could make it a whole lot safer by simply not having train lines at all..

We could cut road deaths to zero overnight if we banned roads and cars.

Safety measures should be there... but there comes a point where adding more just makes the system unworkable. Adding more cameras and manning them all is unsustainable on several levels. It would render the network unusable as trains would be stopped all over the place for no good reason, it would cost so much train fares would be out of most peoples reach...

Don't piss about on the tracks. Teach kids not to do that. Don't do it yourself.

All automatic barrier railway crossings are supervised, more often remotely by camera than direct line of sight these days. The signalman operates the crossing and confirms that the gates/barriers are in the correct position and that the crossing area is clear before signaling the all clear.

Not all of them; some use an obstacle detector.

Ooh, thanks for that. I hadn't realised they had gone Live, last time I read about it it was still a trial. Interesting technology.
