To need to know I’m being unreasonable!

I hope that I am being unreasonable but want confirmation of it, so that I can move on with my day šŸ˜‚

I have used some hand sanitiser that contains 70% ethanol. Whilst my hands were still wet, I had a drink of water. I’d probably used too much sanitiser because the smell of alcohol was so strong, it nearly knocked me off my feet. I must have inhaled it as the lining of my nose feels funny now.

I wouldn’t usually care but I’m expecting a baby soon and it’s occurred to me since that obvs alcohol is a huge no-no in pregnancy. I know some women drink anyway and their babies are fine, but I also wonder if there’s a higher concentration of alcohol in sanitiser and the effects of inhaling it.

AIBU? Please tell me I am being as ridiculous as I think I am and that baby won’t have the alcohol fumes travelling across the placenta…….

Kindly, yes, you're being ridiculous.

It's an infinitesimal amount, detectable to your nose but won't register anywhere else physiologically.

Similar analogy would be smelling a whisky or a vodka - the smell is not going to have an impact.

Thank you, it was such a strong smell it made me splutter a bit but I suppose a strong alcoholic drink could do that too

You’ll be fine, and so will baby.

ThreeEggOmlette · 03/06/2024 16:05

A smell won't hurt your baby!

Dancingontheedge · 03/06/2024 16:09

No, it won’t make a difference, as others have said.
Yes, as an intelligent, educated woman with years of teaching experience before pregnancy…I had some very odd and downright daft worries that my friends and relatives were very kind about and managed to keep a straight face. I hope you have the same level of care from those close to you.

Helloworld56 · 03/06/2024 16:11

You didn't drink the hand sanitizer, you drank the water. Smelling the alcohol would have no effect on your baby, so you don't need to worry at all.

Thanks everyone. I recognise it’s silly but I’m more concerned because of how much it stung my nose. I made the mistake of googling it and every source on the internet says inhaling alcohol is much more dangerous than drinking it.

You didn’t inhale it though. Honestly you’ll be absolutely fine x

I’ve no idea why it stung my nose so much!
