Headache + eye pain

user666555 · 02/06/2024 19:22

Hello,

Posting on AIBU for traffic.

I'm going to make an appointment this coming week, however I was just wondering if anyone else has had any experience of this...?

I keep getting headaches on a daily basis. I'm also feeling the pain behind my right eye.

As I said, I will see the GP but any idea as to what it could be?

Thanks

Problems with your teeth?

Do you wear specs? If not, you might need them without realising.

I get a headache and eye ache when I'm really tired. I wear specs, which helps a little, but sleep is often the answer for me.

I have suffered from migraines off and on for many years. I get sight disturbance with the migraine and certainly when I was younger when the sight disturbance cleared I used to get a really awful pain in my right eye.
Possibly your problem might be migraine related but you are right that you need to get it checked out with your gp.

StormingNorman · 02/06/2024 19:28

Migraine?

Icannoteven · 02/06/2024 19:28

I get this and it’s caused by an eye muscle problem in my case (which is exacerbated by hormones and lack of sleep). I get eye excercises to do.

StormingNorman · 02/06/2024 19:28

Cluster headache?

user666555 · 02/06/2024 19:29

I do grind my teeth I think so maybe that might be it? But would that cause pain behind the eye?

I wear glasses (all the time as I find it difficult to see without them) maybe I need to get another eye test done as perhaps my prescription may have changed?

Have a six month old do sleep is up and down. Not as bad as the newborn days but still wake up a few times a night. Could be that too.

Normally I'd say I have quite a lot of resilience but the headache keeps making me really snappy as it's there everyday and painkillers aren't really doing much for it.

I used to get these 4-5 days a week. They were worst around the eye but sort of came over the back of my head. The pain was awful. It was a neck problem, and an occipital nerve block injection in the back on my neck cured it. I now only get them maybe once every couple of months.

I had to go private for this though - my GP recommended ibuprofen.

How often are you taking painkillers? It's worth considering whether this could be rebound headaches - you can get these from regular paracetamol/ibuprofen. You'd need to stop then cold turkey for a while to see if it helps.

Leavingasinkingship · 02/06/2024 19:34

I get tension headaches and they can feel like this. People often assume that tension headaches are due to stress, they can be but mine aren't usually - I can have tension in the muscles without realising it until the headache starts. If you grind your teeth that suggests you have tension in the jaw which can often be related to headaches.

My GP told me that a way of telling the difference was exercise - if it was a migraine and you tried to exercise it would make it way worse and you'd stop. Whereas like exercise will often make a tension headache ease up.

Wheat bags - the type you put in the microwave - are the main way I manage them.

Bluedabadeeba · 02/06/2024 20:33

Sounds like a cluster headache to me. About the right time of year they usually flair up too - spring (if I remember correctly ).

Check out this website:
https://ouchuk.org/

There's a questionnaire so you can see if the symptoms match.

I've had a variation of CH for over 20y now- luckily NOT chronic, or as painful as some describe. But they can last for 4/5days though.

Does it feel a bit like brain freeze x 1000? Do you have a fat/bloodshot eye?

Sumatriptan works wonders for me (so did Naramig until it stopped working one day). Oxygen is also a treatment. If I can get myself outside, I find that lying down (or a walk if i can manage it) and just breathing the fresh air eases it.

Ant new stresses??
Do you have or had migraine?
Change in the way you sleep, new mattress, especially pillows??
How are your teeth - any pain in the back teeth??

Definitely get an eye test to rule out eye strain and see the dentist as they can check how badly you grind your teeth and let you know if it’s likely causing the pain.

Cityandmakeup · 02/06/2024 20:38

I used to get these and got TMJ Botox, not on nhs, amazing.

SleepyRich · 02/06/2024 21:29

In addition to the GP would definitely have an eye checkup/discuss symptoms with the optician.

There are quite a few possible causes, migraine/retinal migraine, cluster headaches, optic neuritis, eye strain, graves disease

This page has some good red flags which if you experience you should escalate assessment:

I've realised that it's not constant it's fine for a good few hours in the morning then it starts and lasts for ages and now it's okay again. No where near as intense. Id say now it's a 2/10. Before it was like a 7/10. It's been like this for a few days.

Will look at going for an eye test too.

Hope I get an appointment for this week as when it starts hurting it's quite painful

I posted last week about my random eye pain, headache, and general muscle aches and fatigue. I think it must have been a weird virus because it lasted about 5 days then left. I kept waiting for the sore throat or cough but it never came.

Confusedmermaid1 · 02/06/2024 21:59

I get headaches like this sometimes, my GP claimed stress (nothing particularly stressful happening so I don’t think that’s it) and offered me anti anxiety medication which I declined.

It’s only anecdotal and as a logical person I didn’t really believe it but I had my daith pierced and it helped. Even if it’s only placebo it has actually helped 😅

Hope your GP is more useful than mine!

Menora · 02/06/2024 22:02

These are the bane of my life for years and years

it’s a combination of many things - thick hair up too high on head for too long, too tight, bad posture, tension headaches, dry eyes, tendency to get migraines anyway, too much screen time, not enough sleep etc, sleeping funny, being dehydrated, hormones and def grinding my teeth. I wear glasses as I have astigmatism and migraine with eye pain is common for me but if it’s not common for you deffo start with an optician for a good eye check

I have to try to avoid all these things a lot of the time but it still comes for me 😭

justasking111 · 02/06/2024 22:05

Mine were caused by glaucoma, which my optician spotted. So getting an eye test is a good call.

user666555 · 02/06/2024 23:11

@justasking111 have a family history of glaucoma so I'm defo going to book an eye test this week too

My sinus pain is like that.

fashionqueen0123 · 02/06/2024 23:23

I’ve had some headache issues and got an eye exam and paid for the scan at the backs of your eyes for an extra £10 and it was really useful to be able to tell the GP that I’d already had this done. So if you have any problems getting a GP appt then try optician in the meantime.

Wholelottawoman · 02/06/2024 23:32

I started taking daily antihistamines for very similar symptoms, I'm fairly sure it's how hay fever affects me, maybe worth a try to rule it out? I've not had headache/eye pain since Smile
