Nervous about GA & another op after last op

I’m due to have another op with the same surgeon. Had an op about 2 years ago, but now I have a DS.

The last op went very well except for the ga - I think I may have been given too much. Once I woke up I couldn’t stay awake which was very scary, I kept passing out for hours. I couldn’t keep my eyes open or manage a minute of conversation. Felt drugged and out of control. I threw up for hours once I was awake.

I’ve had quite a few ops, but as I’m getting older I’m more fearful; and this experience has me really scared. What if I get the same anaesthetist, and I die this time?

I completely understand. I’ve had nine GAs for various operations and I have increasingly reacted badly to them.

The last operation I had, I had a spinal anaesthetic and sedation. My recovery was so much better. Tell your anaesthetist exactly what happened and discuss your options. Good luck.

It’s not at all strange to be feeling scared after that. Talk about it with your anaesthetist.

I’ve had several major operations and was frequently violently ill afterwards. I mentioned it prior to the last one and the surgeon said I was probably sensitive to morphine. They gave me something else instead and that helped immensely.

That said, I don’t think it’s odd to be unable to stay awake afterwards and I wouldn’t have thought it was anything to do with an error on the anaesthetist’s part. But talk, talk, talk to them about everything and insist that your concerns are taken seriously. I think they should be able to put your mind at rest. There’s absolutely nothing unusual about your fears though!

Thank you both, that’s very helpful, and has put my mind at ease. I will be sure to speak to the anaesthetist.

It’s helpful to hear about your experiences too, thanks for sharing 😊
