I was curtain twitching and now I’m worried! AIBU?

I was being nosey. Police car on estate opposite our house. The junction of the cul de sac is opposite our house.

Another police car followed, and a van.

Without thinking, I looked out the window. Didn’t have any lights on in the room and it was getting dark, but I pulled the curtain back.

The van was obstructing my view of what was going on but my neighbour has text me to say they were searching the man. They have now taken him with them. I’m really worried though that the man (or the police) could have seen me curtain twitching and hold some kind of grudge, or in the police’s case if I could get into any kind of bother for this?

Am I overthinking it? I’m worried he’d be dangerous and be pissed off that I was looking out the window.

He’d have obviously had to have glanced up at the exact split second that I opened the curtain, so I recognise it’s probably improbable but there’s been loads of police on our street lately and it’s unnerving especially when DH works nights

You’re overthinking.

Thisisthedawningoftheageofaquarius · 01/06/2024 23:00

I think if he’s he’s getting arrested by tonnes of cops he’s more to be worried about than a nosey neighbour - I wouldn’t dwell on it x

StripedTomatoes · 01/06/2024 23:01

I'm pretty sure if you're in the middle of being searched by the police, you're not looking about to see who happens to be at their window.

Justcallmebebes · 01/06/2024 23:35

I am 100% sure you will not get in trouble with the police for looking out of your window and it sounds like your neighbour has bigger fish to fry. Don't sweat it

Theredoubtableskins · 01/06/2024 23:38

Are you ok? This isn’t a normal thought to have, nor is it a healthy one. It’s a very odd reaction.
Are you talking to anyone about your anxiety levels?

Comedycook · 01/06/2024 23:40

Do you have anxiety?

This is so far off the scale of something to worry about.

You say you have anxiety.

It's definitely down to that.

Fgfgfg · 01/06/2024 23:45

You're definitely over thinking this. It's a fairly regular occurrence where I live and if it looks especially interesting I have been known to open the door and watch. You'll be fine.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 01/06/2024 23:46

You wouldn't have been the only one
And I bet some were far more obvious
I mean... your neighbour knew he was being searched so was obviously watching much more closely

You need to relax

Comedycook · 01/06/2024 23:47

So you're not going to get in trouble with the police. You can look out your window...it's not illegal and people watch all the time when police are working or arresting someone. Ever seen a car accident and the number of people who are gawping at what's going on...or a crime scene that's been taped off. The public always want to have a look. As for the person being searched...they have their own issues to worry about

Springchickenonion · 02/06/2024 00:13

He probably didn't see you looking and you won't have been the only one. Relax @chessica

I alway feel the urge to take the dog out for a short walk when anything police/fire engine related occurs near my house. I live in a notorious area of North London, so this happens quie often. My dog is quite surprised to be woken up in the middle of the night to be my nosing accomplice.

Thepossibility · 02/06/2024 00:26

You would be the last of anyone's concern in this situation. Unless you were standing at the window fully nude, it sounds like everyone's attention was elsewhere.

mollyfolk · 02/06/2024 00:27

I used to live in an urban area where this type of thing was a regular occurrence and I’d always be curtain twitching when I saw lights flashing! Human nature. I wouldn’t worry about it

YaMuvva · 02/06/2024 00:41

OP do you really think it’s illegal to look out your window?

During my Uni days I lived with flat mates on the street which was next to the area where tall the pubs and clubs were.

If we were skint on a weekend we’d set up cushions on the bay window and watch all the drama unfold outdoors, it was better than a night out most of the time 😂

Redglitter · 02/06/2024 00:46

Why on earth would the police be bothered. Honestly its part and parcel of them attending calls. Nothing attracts attention like a police car in the street does. They won't even have registered and if they did they'll not be in the least bothered. The only neighbours that bother them are ones that come out filming and shouting at them

Topseyt123 · 02/06/2024 00:53

It certainly isn't illegal to look out of your window. Stop overthinking. None of them will give a shit, and the police are well used to being watched as they go about their business.

LiterallyOnFire · 02/06/2024 01:16

I would imagine he has more pressing concerns.

Curtain twitching? I would have been stood at my gate 🤣🤣
