A cracker isn't an appropriate food for weaning

Mother in law is looking after baby this week whilst I recover from a tooth infection and I'm on a drip in hospital. Husband is of course overseas working. She's sent me a picture of the baby holding a cracker. Baby has just turned six months. She's an ex nursery nurse!

What’s wrong with a cracker? I think that’s a good weaning food, my youngest started with toast and a banana

TheKoalaWhoCould · 01/06/2024 22:23

Crackers are fine as long as not too high in salt - they gum them. They’re no different to teething biscuits really.

CelesteCunningham · 01/06/2024 22:23

I'm sure mine had bread sticks and the like from the off. They loved to teethe on them.

Mystro202 · 01/06/2024 22:23

Gosh my 9 month old would still cough and splutter with a cracker.
Not very safe imo

RisingMist · 01/06/2024 22:23

A cracker is not the most nutritious food, but it is completely harmless. At 6 months, most nutrition should be coming from milk anyway. It sounds like you are having a tough time, but I really wouldn't worry too much about this.

TeaKitten · 01/06/2024 22:24

It’s harmless and not worth stressing over. It must be rubbish missing out on seeing the baby try things first hand, but try not to stress about it.

MaryShelley1818 · 01/06/2024 22:25

Crackers and breadsticks etc are fine 🙂

DappledThings · 01/06/2024 22:26

Why not?

Cerealkiller4U · 01/06/2024 22:28

I did baby led weaning and would of thought a cracker was fab

DreadPirateRobots · 01/06/2024 22:30

...it's a cracker. Not crack cocaine. It's fine.

The first thing my secondborn ever ate was a shopbought chocolate chip cookie he swiped from his older sibling when my back was turned. He was five months. He is, I assure you, both still alive and healthy.

Firecarrier · 01/06/2024 22:34

I'm not over precious at all but I personally wouldn't give a six month old a cracker, they sort of splinter and then have quite sharp edges and dry crumbs that could be inhaled and catch the back of the throat and make them cough, buttery toast on the other hand....

TheOneWithUnagi · 01/06/2024 22:51

Crackers are fine. They sort of suck them so they go soft and mushy anyway.

Edited

Mine swiped a chocolate croissant out of my hand when he was in the sling (turned his head around and faceplanted onto it, which I was not expecting him to do).

Also still very much alive and well, and very fond of fruit and veg these days.

What's wrong with a cracker?

They gum them to death!

brunettemic · 01/06/2024 23:00

Call the police immediately, it’s the only sensible solution to a problem of this magnitude.

101 at the very least.

Dakotabluebell · 01/06/2024 23:07

Your mil is doing you a HUGE favour and a cracker won't hurt your baby.

BabyRainder · 02/06/2024 03:35

Not sure why other posters are being rude.

Im starting weaning next month and we get told only vegetables/some fruits and only food you can squeeze between you two fingers.

So yeah I understand wher OP is coming from and she's clearly not being choosy, she just doesnt want to question it when MIL isnt even in the same post code

Zanatdy · 02/06/2024 03:43

I wouldn’t give a 6 month old baby a cracker personally, I’d be concerned about choking and would stick to the food my DIL had told me he eats and not introduce new foods

YellowHairband · 02/06/2024 06:42

Not the point of the thread I know but what does your husband do for work? He has a 6 month old baby and a wife who's been hospitalised - why can't he come home?

As for the cracker, your MIL is doing you (and your husband) a massive favour here, and the cracker won't harm him. I'd let it go.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 02/06/2024 06:46

At 6 months baby can eat pretty much anything you can except whole nuts and honey.

Nothing wrong with a cracker as finger food.

thecatsthecats · 02/06/2024 07:16

I'd be pissed off on the allergen front to be honest. But then we've hit most allergens in the book to be honest with rashes, vomiting, diarrhea etc.

I'm having to be cautious with my own MIL who just doesn't seem to get that some things make him feel like crap and that he's perfectly happy chewing on fruit and veg.

I agree. I didn’t give mine crackers or breadsticks right at the beginning of weaning for this reason also.

BurbageBrook · 02/06/2024 07:19

I think it's a bit much for that age personally. I would want any food to be cut into strips no thicker than a little finger.

BurbageBrook · 02/06/2024 07:22

There's a lot of misconceptions about BLW see above some people think absolutely anything goes. BLW experts would not recommend crackers. Solid starts has a good guide
