Kids party no food

Thebabewiththepowerof · 01/06/2024 17:58

Quick one

Aibu to think the recent move towards not providing party food at kids parties is a bit odd?

Just picked up DS from yet another party where no food was provided (and no it’s not a cost thing, not in this case anyway) just a doughnut 🍩.

The kids don’t care I’m sure but I wasn’t planning on doing a “dinner” tonight so had to come home and produce something from nothing because he was hungry. If you aren’t providing food then at least tell us in advance so we know!

Anyway, am I?

ps for context he is 8, appreciate if he were 16 this would all be a bit weird 🤪

It bloody does when you can only buy the food provided by the venue

If you can't fucking afford it you don't pick that venue!!

Wizarddry

I would provide a doughnut or cake as well as hot dogs & salad, but then my parents raised me knowing how to host a party properly.

It's a shame they didn't raise you with some self-awareness and manners though.

tiggergoesbounce · 01/06/2024 20:53

People are really missing the point here, that culturally and socially, hosting a party is expected to include providing a party tea

But social expectations can change, slowly.

If you can't afford to host a party, don't

But they could afford to throw a party, they threw a party and the children enjoyed it. Job done, I don't know one single parent who plans not to feed their child tea, because they are attending a party. We plan tea/lunch around parties because we know its only bits of snacky food.

Coffeeisnecessary · 01/06/2024 20:53

We’ve been a to a few like that held at an outdoor adventure type place with no place to prepare food, it’s expensive to host that type so I can see why but it is annoying if the timing is over a meal!

Yeah, how dare people from a less privileged background want to have a soft play party for their kids? Hmm

The poster was in a situation where it is expected to invite the whole class and siblings. Food would have cost £200.

It does not bloody cost £200 to provide a simple meal for a class of 30 children. You can buy 30 sausages for £10, plus buns another £10.

£10 on cucumbers & cherry tomatoes.

Done.

It does when the venue says the catering needs to be provided by them at £5 per head, which is the case in this situation

Whilst food is nice to have, I would prefer my child to be invited to a party where they have a lot of fun and just a slice of cake than not be invited to a party.

😧 No jam slags?!

All men are shit.

mewkins · 01/06/2024 20:58

Bizarre thread - who knew party food was so contentious?!? My kids are older so birthdays are often celebrated with an activity for their friends and food isn't always possible (outdoors, nowhere to have a picnic etc). My ds has been to similar activity things and sometimes there isn't time to eat (eg. They've hired a pool for 90 mins and there's no party room or time to eat). Literally nobody gives a shit and the kids have fun.

What kind of Hyacinth Bucket bullshit is this?

Well done you for being the hostess with the fucking mostess. The height of achievement in life is clearly providing a sausage roll, carrot sticks and one triangle sandwich to 40 kids at a party.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/06/2024 18:07

Bloody husband pilfered them.....!

Obviously tOP went to the party where the scotch eggs, sausage rolls and jam slags were pinched by the husband
.

Mebbe mine hostess is hoping for moral censure to send the message home.

TheFallenMadonna · 01/06/2024 21:04

Do children eat party food now? When my DC were young enough for that sort of party, pretty much the only things that got eaten were some crisps and the icing from the fairy cakes and the top (but only the top) of the iced gems. Everything else was really window dressing.

diddl · 01/06/2024 21:05

I wouldn't be expecting much food if it was 2-4.

Maybe just birthday cake.

They would have had lunch before they went & another meal after they got back.

Thebabewiththepowerof · 01/06/2024 21:06

Hello everyone. Thanks for the replies. I read them all and tried to reply where I felt able

Sorry to anyone who got a bit lambasted on here.

Also what has this got to do with premie babies? Let’s not derail this

just to draw this to a close:

1- no I did not have a problem feeding my kid but yes I was surprised that there was no food. However maybe given that it’s become more regular then maybe I should have expected it - silly me

2 - I just came here to ask other parents their opinion on this

3 - I didn’t expect someone else to feed my child as was mentioned before, more so that he would come home wanting maybe a snack or something having loaded up on basic PARTY food

4 - it was a party. Not a play date. Invites and everything. Yes we took a gift. In fact it was money as birthday child was saving for a high ticket item

5 - if the parents had said no food or just a snack on the invite I would be absolutely fine with that. In fact that’s how it’s been at a previous one so expectations managed successfully on that occasion

6 - if that’s how parties are as they get older great will save me money next year

This thread may be a good place to ask, it’s my 5 year olds party next week, I was going to give everyone a book (the works 10 for £10 jobby) instead of a party bag. Will the kids think fuck this bitch? Or is it an ok substitute for a full of expensive shite that gets lost in 5 minutes party bag?

Also… we are, obviously, serving food… like every other normal person!

Thebabewiththepowerof · 01/06/2024 21:06

Oh and also please what’s a jam slag?

I would love this for my kid. Party bags are just rubbish. Much nicer to get a book or a bag of sweets like the grab bag size £1 ones and a sticker saying thanks for coming to little Katie’s party

And elbow drop the birthday kid as I left.

🤣🤣🤣

Milliemoo6 · 01/06/2024 21:12

I've never heard of this, hopefully it's not a 'trend' that will ever come to my neck of the woods. Always food at a kids party, time of the party is irrelevant.

StormingNorman · 01/06/2024 21:12

Pin0cchio · 01/06/2024 20:37

I just don't think kids have to have piles of food to have a good time

People are really missing the point here, that culturally and socially, hosting a party is expected to include providing a party tea.

If you can't afford to host a party, don't.

I feel sorry for all the children who miss out on having a birthday party because their parents are shamed by people like you. I’m sure you don’t mean to be so insensitive but your privilege and lack of empathy is showing.

Jam slags thread for you op… (why people were joking you’d attended this ops party and her husband had eaten the food.)

Been to about 15 reception parties this year, every single one of them provided food, regardless of time or venue. It would certainly be seen as weird/rude around here not to.

Except in this situation of class plus siblings there were 40 children. And the venue did not allow external catering and their price was £5 per head.

If you’re going to be so pompous at least get your facts straight.

Biffbaff · 01/06/2024 21:17

It's definitely not what I would expect for the hosts to have a children's birthday party at their house and not do a few sandwiches. Donuts are a total copout and probably as expensive as making some sandwiches would have been, seems like they just couldn't be arsed with providing that. Disagree with all these "depends on the time of day" comments - my kid and most humans will eat a party buffet whenever the party is thrown. It's not a whole meal, is it, it's just a bit of finger food. You might get away with not feeding everyone at a party that starts at 9am as they would have just had breakfast, but also, I would disapprove of this because it's far too early for that level of chaos!
