Am ND so not sure if that makes a difference.

Had my old phone for 4 years and got a new one a week ago and I keep going back on my old one to do things.

Old phone was a Huawei and this is a Samsung.

I struggle too. Back in the day new phone would come with a user guide that covered everything you needed to know about the handset. Now all you get is a basic start up leaflet which is no help at all, and you're lucky if the box includes a fucking charger😡 Took me many weeks to fathom out how to use my first smartphone and I'm still working through all the settings of my new one.

Oh I was so annoyed that there was no charger!!

I was relatively late to getting the modern types of smartphones and I think the first one took me like a year to become fully comfortable in using it...then I couldn't find what I wanted (bigger phone storage and a particular type of interface) in their newer models so swapped to a different phone brand and again it's taken me like 6 months/a year to become completely confident in how to use it, so it's definitely not just you who struggles with this!

I do sort of understand the charger thing, but a lot of things use the kind of chargers that phones also use, be it lightening/micro/usb-c so a lot of people probably wouldn't need an additional charger, but I can appreciate that that might not be the case for everyone and it does feel a bit tight on their part.

With the charger though my normal charger that is generic days 10 hours to charge when I plug it in.

And DH Samsung charger says 3 hours so they're definitely different to normal chargers you have roung the house.

No, not at all, but that maybe because I only ever have Samsungs. Tbh I barely notice it's a new phone after a couple of days.

Greenlittecat · 01/06/2024 19:08

I don't struggle if I'm staying with Iphone but when I changed from Samsung to Iphone i had no idea what I was doing!!

EasternStandard · 01/06/2024 19:09

I probably would if I switched from iPhone

piningforautumn · 01/06/2024 19:14

I think a learning curve when you change phones is normal, or at least not unusual.

Have you checked YouTube to see if there are any guides for your phone model? I watched a few tips and tricks vids when I got my last phone, and it helped.

Lifestooshort71 · 01/06/2024 19:15

I'm a Samsung person and every time I have to upgrade, I spend 3 days getting it to look like the old one, behave like the old one and sound......you get the picture. I must be missing out on years of all the new gizmos.

isthismylifenow · 01/06/2024 19:23

I am with you OP.

I only change phones when it's absolutely necessary. I really dread it.

I too had a Huawei as my last phone and I still use it, as a second phone without a sim. I use it for scrolling FB and general internet stuff, apps etc. And it has a decent calendar that I still have not found on my newer phone.

I just use the new one for calls and messages. My DC think I'm nuts but I like my system 😃

Thevelvelletes · 01/06/2024 19:32

I stick with same make and model and get the updated version and they're always near enough identical.

Nat6999 · 01/06/2024 21:27

I hate the bit where you are setting up a new phone, even though with Samsung you can use the app to transfer everything over. Once it's set up I put my old phone in a drawer & never look at it again, just to keep for emergencies like if the new phone packs up.

It definitely shouldn't be taking 10 hours to charge your phone! My Samsung take 1.5, maybe 3 hours if the battery is nearly completely empty. I just use a bought online USB C cable, though, which I also use for other electronics with that type of port like my power banks etc.

How long is your generic charger cable? If it's longer then your DH's Samsung one then it may take longer, because the longer the cable is, the more electrical resistance there is and so it'll be much slower to charge (apologies if you do already know that, not everyone does though). If it's about the same length, I'm not sure why it would be so slow.

With my last couple of iPhones you just put the phones beside each other and it transferred everything.

I stick with iPhone OP because I'm autistic and really struggle with new things.

Ginkypig · 03/06/2024 00:44

That’s one of the reasons I stuck with Nokia for years then iPhone once smart phones became a thing.

its like anything it just takes practice then once you’re used to it it’ll be fine but you are going to actually use it to learn so if you are doing something that you have a bit of time to work out use it as a way to practice while keeping the other one asa standby when you’re really busy or as I have had to do loads of times for autistic dp every time he gets a new phone YouTube the specific thing you want to do. There is almost always a YouTube video!

Different chargers output different wattages. Most modern USB-C chargers will support USB PD (Power Delivery) and output 20W or much higher. Older chargers might only put out 5W or 12W so they'll take much longer. The phone knows how much wattage it's getting and how much charge the battery needs to fill up, so it can provide accurate time estimates.

You can buy a generic USB PD charger on Amazon quite cheaply. Anker is a good brand.
