06/24 does that mean it can still be eaten?

What is it?

Best before isn’t about safety and is about quality, most times.

If it’s bread that’s best before though I’d chuck it. Gravy granules? Forever

strawberryjeans · 01/06/2024 17:07

Just read the date. Best before 06/24? Absolutely, it’s only just June!

Gravy granules etc best before 10/22 are probably still fine.

ZipZapZoom · 01/06/2024 17:10

June 2024? Yes it's literally the first day of June you'll be fine!

ChrisPPancake · 01/06/2024 17:14

If it's month/year it generally means the end of the month. If it was specific it would be day/month/year.

SofaSpuds · 01/06/2024 17:18

No, it went off at midnight.

IncognitoPanda · 01/06/2024 17:19

It will be best before end of June - should be fine

No, it went off at midnight.

You're joking right?

persisted · 01/06/2024 17:25

It's best before, not poisonous after.
To be honest if I found it in the cupboard after that I'd still eat it if it smelled/looked ok.

🤣

"Best before" is just that. The food will be at its best by the stated date, but will be safe to eat afterwards, possibly long afterwards. "Use by" is found on foods which spoil quickly, like milk or soft cheese. However, even in these cases, the food or drink is often safe to consume well after the stated date. Use your eyes and nose to decide.

Anyway, in this case you've got an entire month left so clearly nothing to worry about!

Throughahedgebackwards · 01/06/2024 17:37

Anything that only gives a month and a year, rather than a specific date, is going to be an item with a very long shelf life and will likely be fine way after the given date. And as others have pointed out, best before does not mean "don't eat after".

FionnulaTheCooler · 01/06/2024 17:39

If its dry packet food or tinned it will be fine, I've eaten stuff months after the best before date if it was non-perishable and I'm still here.

Bjorkdidit · 01/06/2024 18:10

I don't understand where this sort of thinking has come from Confused Do people seriously think something with a BBE, ie best before the end of June 2024 can't be eaten?

The other day I ate a packet of microwave dal that was BBE some time in 2021 and it was absolutely fine. They've found tinned stuff from early Antarctic explorers that is decades old and still safe to eat.

PieonaBarm · 01/06/2024 18:13

I don't even look at best before or even use by dates. If it looks/smells ok it gets eaten in our house, My mum bought everything from the butcher or greengrocer when I was growing up and there wasn't a use by in sight.
