Three hours walking daily

As part of my work this month I spend a good three hours walking - walking around, not speed walking. And carrying bags. Six days a week.

I loathe exercise but enjoy this, and spend the rest of the time either netflixing or life-ing eg cooking and gardening.

AIBU to think this counts as a reasonably active lifestyle?

Yes it counts as an active lifestyle. Walking is really good exercise.

There have been studies that show that is important to do actual 'exercise' in addition to been active at work. I spend most of my day on my feet, moving trays of plants, watering etc but that's apparently not enough

Yes, I think that’s fairly active. It’s not a variety of activities but it’s still better than many people.

YANBU. Walking is the best exercise, especially if you're able to do lots of it. Carrying bags will make it even better exercise (as long as you're carrying them well and watching your posture and load bearing). I'm trying to fit in more walking outside of work hours during the week, now that it's light in the evening, but it's hard to motivate myself after a day at work. Also I am prone to plantar fasciitis.

Three hours of solid walking around carrying stuff is a bit different from just being on your feet at work though.

I was the most fit of my life when I had a job that involved being on my feet and walked to work (30 minutes each way); now I walk 15 mins a day and go to the gym but have an office job and drive a lot so still not as fit as I was when walking so much more

BitOutOfPractice · 01/06/2024 15:50

I think it only counts as exercise if it raises your heart rate though. Does it?

Supersimkin2 · 01/06/2024 16:02

Yes, in bits. By the end I’m usually carrying an extra 10kg too.

Surely walking at virtually any pace will raise your heart rate a bit, even more so if you're carrying stuff.

Supersimkin2 · 01/06/2024 16:55

Well quite. And I’ve had two coffees first.
