To take the pain killers after hemorrhoid banding and anal tag removal

I had a large hemorrhoid banded 4 days ago and two anal skin tags removed (they use diathermy and leave open wounds). I'm still bleeding, I have been trying to manage on paracetamol since, I wake up fine but then the pain in the day time is really bad, my head hurts from the pain. Opening my bowels hurts and I have set up a bowl of warm water to use after and ordered a handheld bidet thing. I'm also using movicol regularly. I have a young baby and I'm breast feedings.

They sent me home with oramorph which I haven't opened, I've held off using it because:

  • It will cause constipation making the situation worse
  • I don't want the baby to get unwell
  • Pain is supposed to be improving from day 3 but it seems to be getting worse

They gave you the medication, take the medication

Take the medication. Well managed pain usually leads to faster healing. If you're worried about it not easing as it should, go back to your specialist or even your GP.

I took Oramorph after c-section and whilst breastfeeding. It did cause constipation but I was unaware. If you’re prepared and keep taking laxative/stool softener I think it would be worth it.

Good luck, I’ve heard that’s a painful recovery but ultimately better quality of life after.

Thanks everyone I took a couple of doses yesterday and it really helped with the pain. I'm taking movicol too so I'm hoping it doesn't affect my bowels too much.

Really wish I hadn't of had this operation now, I underestimated how sensitive this area is.

Can I ask how you got the operation? I think I need similar but just so embarassed. Did you speak to your GP?

Best of luck in recovery Flowers

@DutchTeenyPixie I went through private medical insurance. I think the NHS won't treat anal skin tags as they consider it cosmetic even though they itch and cause issues getting clean. It's a condition that a lot of women have especially after pregnancy and childbirth, so of course the NHS would decide not to cover it.

If you have hemorrhoids you could try asking for a referral and the surgeon could hopefully treat both at the same time. It is very very sore though. They use diathermy to burn off the skin tags leaving a large open wound in a very sensitive area.

@cloudmaker Can I ask was it done under local or general? And can I be really nosy and ask how much you paid? (Am thinking about it myself)

Hope you are feeling better.

cloudmaker · 02/06/2024 10:15

@Gettingannoyednow it was done under a general. My health care insurance covered it, so I'm not sure of the cost. It was done as a day case procedure. I can see some clinics offer it under local or nothing at all. But I'd expect it would be very painful without an anesthetic.

Take all the medicine! I would rather give birth than go through this recovery again! I hope it sorts the issue for you and the recovery is as quick as it can be.

cloudmaker · 02/06/2024 10:29

@delphi13 I underestimated it, I've had a few big operations in the past and been fine and thought this would just be like a couple of little cuts to heal, it's just such a sensitive area and then obviously you have to open bowels regularly which doesn't help the healing or pain. I had searched the anal tag removal and there are several threads with people saying they had no pain at all, so didn't think it would be this bad.
