What’s fair here?

Friends A and B meet for dinner or spa days very regularly. Bill is always split 50/50 as they tend to have similar tastes in food, wine etc.

They met last night at a restaurant that both wanted to go to. On arrival, A mentions that she was a £100 voucher for that restaurant that she’s happy for them to use it towards the meal as it’s not a place she goes to often.

Both eat and drink and have a lovely night.

The bill arrives and it’s for £144.

Who should pay what?

Use her £100 voucher and you pay the £44.

Member786488 · 01/06/2024 09:21

If I were B I’d have to pay the £44, no discussion.

Comingupriver · 01/06/2024 09:22

100% B pays the remainder if not half the whole bill.

WimpoleHat · 01/06/2024 09:23

A uses her voucher, B pays the £44 and buys a round of cakes or coffees or whatever next tIme they’re out as a thank you.

Cancello · 01/06/2024 09:34

I have been in this exact position (me with the £100 voucher, which was a present from a family member) and we (me and a friend) split the balance 50:50. I wouldn't have gone for the meal alone and I wanted her company, so I was happy for us both to share the value of the voucher equally. She was very grateful and did send me a bottle of wine few days later as a thank you but I didn't expect it.

YawYoreYourYoure · 01/06/2024 09:37

22 quid each.

Isitisit · 01/06/2024 09:39

If I was B I would offer to pay it, if I was A, I would be prepared to pay half as I had already offered to share the voucher

msbevvy · 01/06/2024 09:40

B pays £44. They are still getting a good deal.

DaisyChain505 · 01/06/2024 10:08

B pays the £44

Myblindsaredown · 01/06/2024 10:12

B pays the excess, that’s very generous of a.

Mnetcurious · 01/06/2024 10:14

A pays with the voucher, B pays the remaining £44.

Shoxfordian · 01/06/2024 10:20

B should pay 44 because A has been generous in using the voucher with them

Edenmum2 · 01/06/2024 10:21

Op are you hinting that B should pay the £44 and also give £28 back to A?

Charliebrow · 01/06/2024 10:24

B pays £44 and owes A a little thank you next time they meet

Graciiee · 01/06/2024 10:24

B pays the £44, and offers A £28. It's up to A to take or decline it.

PuttingDownRoots · 01/06/2024 10:30

In my friendship group, A would insist on paying half the remainder whilevB would insist on paying the whole of the remainder.

Hermanfromguesswho · 01/06/2024 10:46

If it was my voucher I’d split the £44 bill. If my friend brought the voucher I’d offer to pay the whole £44 but they’d likely say don’t be daft and split it

Caroparo52 · 01/06/2024 10:47

Depends if A offered to put voucher in between them. Should have been discussed beforehand

Caroparo52 · 01/06/2024 10:49

From your post A uses voucher. B puts in £44 and buys the coffees next time as a thank you

longdistanceclaraclara · 01/06/2024 10:49

Just pay the £44.

Supersimkin2 · 01/06/2024 10:49

B pays £44 and thanks lucky stars.

I know people who’d ask for £22.

Jellycatspyjamas · 01/06/2024 10:53

I’d pay half the whole meal, so £44 to the restaurant and offer my friend the balance to make up my half of the cost. I wouldn’t assume she wanted to share the voucher but wanted someone to go with her.

TidyDancer · 01/06/2024 10:54

B should pay the £44 excess. She is still getting a good deal out of it as she's paying £44 for a £72 meal. If they split the excess, it would be virtually equivalent to A paying £122 and B paying £22 which is obviously quite unfair.

PatternedLlama · 01/06/2024 10:54

I have been in this situation and my friend insisted we split the remaining bill 50/50 but I was completely prepared to pay the £44 in this case as it was far less than the half if there had been no voucher. I would be led by what my friend wanted in terms of the voucher use.

Starseeking · 01/06/2024 10:57

If it was me with the voucher and this friend who we always go 50/50, I'd use the voucher then each pay £22.
