Not as passionate about work

Cuidaew · 30/05/2024 22:24

I do a job that I enjoy some of the time but admit my main motivation is the money/ commission (sales related). I go to work to get paid. I do a good job, get things done but I wouldn't say I go above and beyond, only occasionally.

My colleagues seem more purpose driven and pour much more passion into it than I do. Work is their life.

Am I wrong for not making work my passion? They were all having a passionate conversation this afternoon about a project and I was sat there not that bothered thinking when can I clock off. Is it a bad attitude? Or just realising that were all cogs in a corporate machine and I don't actually want to take it so seriously

My boss was speaking about why we come to work and it was all about caring about what we do and no mention of the pay. My current job is okay but dull at the moment… pays well though so I’ll suck it up for a bit as I get to go home at 5pm every day with little stress. I used to be very passionate until I was treated poorly, new exec team came in and I was screwed over. Now they get me 9-5 because they pay me.

frankentall · 30/05/2024 22:31

YANBU except when I am ruler it will be illegal to use the word passion in connection with work.

StormingNorman · 30/05/2024 22:32

You have the right attitude IMO. Don’t give your employer more than you get back!

Minniliscious · 30/05/2024 22:36

Oh god, I could’ve written this. I also work in a place where everyone goes above and beyond. They seem so ‘on it’ all the time - I’m always forgetting to do something or make a minor mistake but they never seem too. They’re also very passionate and excited about projects etc but I really couldn’t care less. It’s purely to earn a wage and that’s it.

Cuidaew · 30/05/2024 22:36

I was also more passionate once but got usurped by someone new and shiny on the team. Made me see that everyone is replaceable and no point treating work like it's the be all and end all

Are you 60yo. I am, can’t wait to retire now.

frankentall · 30/05/2024 22:39

Stop saying fucking passionate - it is work!

I'm not even 40, if I could retire at 40 I would.

I play the lottery each week just in case

I think a lot of people fake it till they make it.

This is me too. Don't hate going to my place of work particularly but it's just a pay cheque to me. Seem to make silly mistakes (I do try not to) I think because I don't really care. Can never come up with new ideas to be proactive or when asked.

How do I vote for you?

I've never been passionate about any job and can't even imagine feeling that way. It's a ridiculous and insulting thing to see on job ads. Passionate feelings can't just appear to order, and it seems very unwise to me to feel that way about a job that could disappear from under you.

fashionqueen0123 · 30/05/2024 23:05

Every office I’ve worked in I’ve felt like that. It’s only since I’ve worked for a charity I actually care.
I once sat in a meeting discussing the colour of a retail item for about 45 mins. I was like who cares - I had to get out of that job!

Cuidaew · 31/05/2024 08:10

I'm dreaming of finding another source of income and being able to quit work. I just don't care anymore.

All the senior leaders are stressed - is that what we're meant to Aspire to?

Nah I'm not fussed. As long as I've got enough money to live on work is just something that needs to be done to achieve that. I used to be all in and was forever passed over. I left a job and met up with my line manager later on. She apologised as it was only after I left she realised how hard I worked and what I did out of hours to carry the others. After that I vowed never to be back in that situation. Also have kids and a cancer diagnosis further my opinion. I now just do my best, get the job done and that's it. I WFH and can go weeks without speaking to another colleague, it's bliss. Sometimes I look at what friends and family earn around me and wish I was on similar. I then remind myself that I don't have the stress and the balancing acts that they do.

I feel exactly the same. The managers here are always so stressed and get so worked up they can't even be civil when speaking to people. Even on their money I wouldn't want to end up that way.

JustMarriedBecca · 31/05/2024 09:48

I bet the managers don't care either. They're just better at faking it than you.

Senior Manager here. I'm described in my 360 feedback as motivated, inspirational and dedicated to developing my team.

I go to work to get paid so I can go on holiday and have a comfortable life with the kids. I could not give an actual FIG about work.

I would stand and do the photocopying or empty the bins if they paid me the same.

Cuidaew · 31/05/2024 09:53

I'd live to have ideas on jobs that aren't full of corporate bollocks and stressed managers

I keep looking into changing careers as I'm desperate for something different

If you are liked and popular then you are considered to be good at your job . This was a rude awakening for me . I noticed popular people did enough to stay out of trouble but were good at looking busy . If you are liked at work all your mistakes are brushed under the carpet. There were also quiet people who went under the radar who seemed to blend into the background and went unnoticed.

Butterleigh · 31/05/2024 10:16

I worked in retail and i noticed management got worked to death , burnt out , quit and the whole cycle started again .

Very true. Workplace is a bit of a popularity contest these days and I've never been up for all that crap

part and parcel at times, besides better to in general get along with everyone as more of a team effort etc

gabsdot · 31/05/2024 11:48

I'm like you. I enjoy my job but I have no interest in progressing . I'm 54 and I alwaysa say If i wanted a career I would have had one by now. I have a fulfilling life outside work.
Not everyone can be passionate about work.
